State of the Union

We’re receiving very mixed signals about the job market this past week.

According to a new report from CIBC World Markets, the country's job market is perhaps the worst it has ever been during non-recession periods.  It says that the employment quality index fell by one per cent over 2010, due to sluggish job creation late in 2011 and worsening job quality in the national labour market.

On the other hand, Statistics Canada says December showed an increase of 17,500 jobs in the economy,  a bright note considering the last three months of the 2011 saw an overall loss of 55,000 jobs.

As far as things at Jobs.ca go, we’re onto our second week at our newly renovated site.  We are encouraged by your comments and suggestions thus far.  Here are a few things we have been working on in our first couple of weeks:

  • We added the “recent jobs” section on the front of the site.  That saves you from having to type in the same search over and over again when you come back.  You just click one of your past searches and you are off.
  • While features are great, without the job listings we’re nowhere.  That’s why we’re in the process of adding Canada’s major job boards and recruiters to our site including Monster.ca, Working.com, Workopolis  etc.  That will really get our job count up!
17,500 jobs were created in December according to StatsCan

We have more planned in the coming weeks including an email alert system that will email you daily when there are new jobs for a search you have defined.

On the content front, we’re always looking for fresh job articles and new bloggers to augment our blogging and advice sections.  If you’re interested in joining our blogging team, please email ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ) me a sample of your writing and what you’d like to write about.

Finally, we’re looking for a full-time programmer to bring our programming in-house to speed up the roll-out of features.  Check out the job description here.

Until next week!
