Summary of hirings and dismissals – April 2019

Here is a summary of the companies where jobs were created and others were lost during the month of April 2019.

HIRINGS

Some 60 new jobs will be created in Quebec City with the arrival of the Décathlon boutique, which will open in August 2019. By the end of the year, 3 new stores will open in the province: an investment of more than 20 million dollars .
 
To support 300% growth over the past 5 years, Groupe TAQ will open a new head office in Quebec City. This $ 14 million project, funded mainly by the Quebec government, will create 225 new positions, including 150 for people with disabilities.

Quebec’s Minister of Economy and Innovation, Pierre Fitzgibbon, has announced that he will provide financial support for aerospace-related projects. In particular, TMC Global intends to open a head office in Montreal. This engineering company will create 100 new jobs over the next few years.

To produce medicinal cannabis, The KDA Group and CanNorth Medic want to invest more than $ 10 million to open a plant in Saint-Gabriel-de-Rimouski. This plant could create some twenty new jobs over the next three years. The project will be in two phases: the first totaling an investment of $ 10 million and the second, $ 40 million.

Mindset Innovation has received $ 150,000 in funding from the Government of Canada to market headphones to help employees focus better. This support will enable the Montreal-based company to create 13 new high-tech jobs.

DISMISSALS

Despite its new wireless residential Internet project, Bell Canada has decided to fire nearly 80 technicians from Quebec and Ontario. The Internet service project will instead be outsourced to subcontractors.

Bombardier Transportation announced that it was cutting 85 jobs in La Pocatière because of the end of two major contracts: the Azur cars on the Montreal metro and the primary parts in New York. The company will seek new contracts to give back work to its employees.

The transfer of the Child Advocate’s Office to the Ontario Ombudsman will save about $ 6 million a year. However, 49 positions will be deleted.
 
Because of the significant cuts announced by the Ontario government, the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) will have to abolish nearly 240 primary teacher positions as of next September. This will also be experienced in high school since students will increase from 22 to 28 students per class: 800 teachers should lose their jobs over the next 4 years.
 
Last month’s 31 percent declines in revenue at Tesla forced Elon Musk to abolish sales-related positions. The company will focus on online sales and will gradually close out its least profitable outlets.
