About the role

Duties and Responsibilities:

In line with the strategic directions of the Office of the Vice-President (Research and International) and the operational initiatives of the Carleton Office for Research Initiatives and Services (CORIS), the Research Programs Administrator contributes to the overall reputation and research intensity growth of the University at the local, national, and international levels.

Reporting to the Assistant Director, Research Services (AD-RS), CORIS, the Research Programs Administrator provides administrative support for a broad range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary research programs (honours/distinctions and grants)offered at the provincial, national, and international level, including but not limited to the Ontario Early Researcher Awards (ERA), Canada Research Chairs (CRC), NSERC USRA/Arthur B. McDonald Prize, SSHRC Impact Awards, etc. This includes support prior to submission, during the submission process, and/or after funding has been awarded.

Additionally, the incumbent supports the preparation and delivery of internal programs designed to support and enhance research intensity at the University, such as the Research Development Grants, Research Achievement Awards, the Multidisciplinary Research Catalyst Funding, etc. The incumbent also assists with other administrative duties within CORIS, as required.

Qualifications:

The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:

  • Ability to interact appropriately and credibly with researchers, faculty members, and professionals external to the University, dealing with complex matters relating to funding regulations and legislation.
  • Good oral and written communication skills, reading and analytical skills to clearly impart the concepts and areas involved in funding research, the preparation of correspondence, organizing and leading info-sessions and workshops, and adjusting competition materials.
  • Thorough knowledge of University operating procedures, good administrative skills, sound judgment, tact and ability to deal effectively with people as well as continuing awareness and sensitivity to other cultures.
  • Thorough knowledge of computer programs and databases and office software applications: MS Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, Outlook, PowerPoint. Knowledge of and hands-on practice in using University financial and research management programs (such as FAST, CUResearch) is considered an asset.
  • Experience working with managers;
  • Ability to work independently, taking initiative, and handle new responsibilities;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and excellent communication skills both verbal and written;
  • High degree of loyalty, discretion, maturity, resourcefulness, and tact to deal with a wide spectrum of occupations.

Education and Experience:

The above is normally acquired through the completion of:

  • University degree or the equivalent to three years of post-secondary education.
  • A master’s degree is preferred.
  • Five years in a university setting acquiring progressively more responsibility, including knowledge of and hands-on practice in the management of research funding programs, project planning and coordination, statistical and qualitative reporting, and reporting to senior management.
