Animal Care Technician II Research Vivarium
About the role
The Research Vivarium at St. Michael's is a state of the art, CCAC award winning facility, serving the in vivo based research and teaching needs of its scientists, physicians, and surgeons. The research conducted at the Research Vivarium emphasizes the medical specialties of St. Michael's Hospital, including diseases of the heart and circulatory system, trauma and metabolic diseases and disorders.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Evaluating the health of every animal in the facility, reporting any unusual behavior or health concerns to the veterinarian
- Administering oral, parenteral and topical medications
- Maintaining animal health records; completing surgical debit reports, and recording narcotic and controlled drug usage in log book
- Providing assistance in restraining of animals for treatments and examinations
- Unpacking new arrivals and performing initial health exams
- Changing bedding materials according to established schedules, including cages in BSL2
- Performing animal welfare assessments on sick animals
- Assisting in the ORs including: making/sterilizing surgical packs, dispensing drugs, setting up ORs and monitoring anesthesia during surgical procedures
- Teaching specialty techniques (oral gavage, blood collection techniques) to researchers
- Maintaining equipment (blood gas analyzer, medical gas tank)
Qualifications
- Veterinary Technician with a minimum of 3-5 years relevant experience
- RLAT certification
- Ability to think analytically and problem solve issues
- Attention to detail
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as a team member
- Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills
- Good understanding of CCAC Guidelines, OMAFRA legislation
- Must have a good attendance record and good punctuality
- Ability to multi task, keep track of work and prioritize
- Surgical experience would be an asset
- Experience teaching would be an asset
