We have a relationship with hundreds of family physicians willing to facilitate pragmatic randomized trials and we have the support of Alberta Health Services, a steward of Alberta’s electronic health data, to leverage that data in order to easily and inexpensively enable all aspects of clinical trial conduct (i.e. determining eligibility, randomizing/allocating participants to intervention/control, collecting outcomes, providing quarterly progress reports, and performing all interim and final analyses). The trials team recently completed Canada’s largest ever primary care trial (BedMed), which was published in JAMA. They are seeking candidates who are interested in learning how to lead pragmatic clinical trials that answer important primary care questions. This is a strategic focus of the Department.

This position is a full-time (1.0 FTE) tenure track (contingent) position, comprised of approximately 40% clinical workplace-based teaching and 60% academic pursuits, including research (40%), teaching (10%), and administration (10%).

  • Leading and contributing to research initiatives that align with the Department’s strategic priorities in primary care and family medicine.

  • Disseminating research findings through peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and knowledge translation activities that engage academic, clinical, and community stakeholders.
  • Supporting and mentoring students, residents, and other trainees involved in research activities.
  • Participating in departmental meetings, committees, and other academic services as appropriate to the clinical faculty role.
  • Contributing to the academic community through peer review, committee service, and engagement with provincial or national research networks.

The successful candidate is expected to actively engage in academic activities, including research, medical education, and leadership opportunities to contribute to the academic mission of the Department of Family Medicine and the University of Alberta.
