In accordance with Letter of Understanding #3 – Research Projects, and under the direct supervision of the College Professor, the Research Assistant assists and supports the supervisor with research-related activities pertaining to the professor’s professional background and within the supervisor’s research areas of interest and expertise.

Functions and Duties

The Research Assistant will assist the supervisor by performing the following duties:

  1. Assists with research for educational purposes.

  2. Assists in identifying perspective subjects for research

  3. Searches literature sources pertaining to the relevant areas of research

  4. Assists in collecting, recording, compiling, summarizing data, and disseminating information.

  5. Participates in research activities with the professor based on the needs of the project.

  6. Review and update their knowledge in research methodology for educational purposes.

Position Specific Functions

  1. Conduct a comprehensive analysis of existing mentorship programs in post secondary settings, both internal and external to the College, to identify best practices and potential improvements to our current Engage! Mentorship program for the School of Business.

  2. Collaborate with students, faculty, and staff to gather insights and feedback on their experiences with the current mentorship program.

  3. Develop recommendations on an enhanced mentorship program including: structure, events, processes, training, and administration

  4. Identify opportunities to develop asynchronous mentorship that is scalable for non-Kelowna students

  5. Prepare and present findings on program recommendations to faculty sponsors and School leadership

  6. Develop a system for assessing the effectiveness of the mentorship program, including participant satisfaction and achievement of goals.

Education and Experience

Enrolled in a post-secondary program at Okanagan College

Prior work experience is an asset.

Skills and Abilities

Current knowledge in research methodology for educational purposes.

  • Excellent research skills with the ability to synthesize data/information and develop/deliver findings and recommendations.

  • Proficiency in the use of a variety of computer software applications.

  • Works effectively both independently and as part of a team

  • Well-developed organizational skills.

  • Detail-oriented.

  • Excellent communication skills to maintain effective correspondence with professors and partners

  • Excellent time management skills to coordinate research and academic activities
