About the role
The Adams Lake Indian Band (ALIB) is seeking a Family Nurse Practitioner to join our expanding health and wellness team. This role will serve members of Adams Lake Indian Band, Skwlāx te Secwepemcúl̓ecw (Squilax), and Neskonlith Indian Band, delivering services grounded in trauma-informed, culturally safe, and wholistic mental wellness approaches.
This is a four-year term position funded through the Primary Care Network (PCN), with the potential for extension based on program success and future funding. The Nurse Practioner will work under the direction of the Sexqeltqin Senior Health Officer and collaborate closely with interdisciplinary teams across all three communities. An ALIB band vehicle will be made available for work related travel.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary Clinical Care
- Deliver full-scope primary care to individuals and families, including:
- Preventative health screening (e.g., immunizations, cervical screening, cardiovascular risk assessments)
- Chronic disease management (e.g., diabetes, hypertension, COPD, arthritis)
- Acute episodic care (e.g., infections, minor injuries, asthma exacerbation)
- Mental health assessments and treatment planning (e.g., depression, anxiety, PTSD)
- Women’s health (e.g., contraceptive care, prenatal/postnatal care, menopause management)
- Conduct comprehensive health assessments, including physical exams, diagnostic interpretation, and clinical decision-making
- Order and interpret laboratory tests, diagnostic imaging, and other relevant investigations
- Initiate, renew, or adjust pharmacological therapies in accordance with current guidelines and BCCNM scope of practice
- Provide end-of-life and palliative care in collaboration with appropriate teams and family members
Trauma-Informed and Culturally Safe Care
- Build trusting, respectful relationships with clients by providing empathetic, client-centered care that acknowledges intergenerational trauma, colonization, and social determinants of health
- Recognize and respond to signs of trauma, violence, or distress, and provide appropriate interventions and referrals
- Incorporate traditional healing practices, Elders, and cultural supports into care planning as appropriate and desired by the client
- Apply cultural humility in all interactions, maintaining a learning posture in working across diverse Indigenous worldviews
Care Coordination and Navigation
- Support patient navigation across multiple systems (health authority services, FNHA programs, traditional medicine, specialists, social services, etc.)
- Collaborate with PCN partners, FNHA clinicians, Community Health Nurses, Mental Health teams, and other providers to develop coordinated care plans
- Facilitate seamless transitions between levels of care (e.g., hospital discharge, referrals to tertiary care, long-term care)
- Conduct home visits when necessary to support vulnerable or home-bound clients and ensure equitable access to care
Health Promotion and Disease Prevention
- Participate in and lead community-based health promotion and disease prevention initiatives, including:
- Health fairs, flu clinics, school visits, and workshops
- Sexual health and family planning education
- Nutrition and lifestyle programs
- Mental wellness and substance use awareness campaigns
- Provide education and coaching to individuals, families, and groups around health literacy, chronic disease self-management, and lifestyle modification
Collaboration, Mentorship, and Teamwork
- Participate actively in interdisciplinary team meetings, case conferences, and collaborative care planning
- Provide clinical guidance and mentorship to other health team members (e.g., Community Health Workers, Nurses, Support Workers)
- Promote shared decision-making and mutual respect within team-based care settings
- Contribute to a safe and supportive working environment that fosters learning, innovation, and high-quality care delivery
Documentation and Clinical Reporting
- Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive clinical documentation using approved Electronic Medical Records (EMR) (e.g., Juno or OSCAR)
- Contribute to the evaluation of patient outcomes and service effectiveness by supporting data collection and reporting
- Ensure compliance with privacy legislation, charting standards, and professional documentation protocols
System Improvement and Advocacy
- Identify systemic barriers to care (e.g., jurisdictional gaps, transportation, racism) and contribute to community-level advocacy
- Support the development of local health service delivery models that reflect community priorities and cultural frameworks
- Participate in continuous quality improvement activities, community health planning, and service evaluation
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS
- Master of Science in Nursing – Family Nurse Practitioner or Registered Nurse (RN) in pursue of FNP
- Active full practice registration with BCCNM, and must be in good standing
- Experience or strong interest in Indigenous health, rural/remote practice, or culturally safe care
- Training in Cultural Safety & Humility or willingness to complete it
- Valid BC driver’s license & ability to travel between sites
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
May provide advice and mentorship to other health professionals.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Those normally associated with a typical office environment. Continuous visual concentration on computer/laptop.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Full time 4-year term position with the possibility of an extension.
Wage range: $70.00-$75.00 per hour commensurate of qualifications and experience.
Hours per week: 75 hours bi-weekly (max 37.5 hrs./week), with flexibility in hours/days of work.
