Course Description:
Today most people live in state-level societies. But 8,000 years ago, no one did. Why such a dramatic change? This comparative analysis of ancient, complexly organized societies is focused on understanding the processes involved in the functioning of states, examining how various political, social, economic, and religious orientations affected state information, cohesion, maintenance and dissolution. What were the range of alternatives explored in the earliest and later complexly organized societies that developed around the world?

- $10,760.28 for Sessional Lecturer III

Qualifications:
Applicants must have a PhD (completed) in Anthropology with a focus on archaeology, and research experience in archaeological interpretation, and other aspects of this course as described. Applicants must also have teaching experience at the undergraduate level, and a comprehensive foundation in the field. Experience with management and delivery of courses using University of Toronto or similar online systems (e.g., Quercus, Canvas-based technologies, Zoom, etc.) is preferred. The mode of instruction for this course is expected to be in-person. However, if this changes for any reason, you will be provided with as much advance notice as practicable.
Duties:
Preparation and delivery of course material, preparation and delivery of assignments, tests and/or exams; supervision of teaching assistants (includes providing instruction on how to mark, as well as holding office hours); marking of students’ work (during the term and beyond if an extension of time is granted by the university officials); submission of grades to university officials; and holding regular office hours.
