Reporting to the Team Leader - People Operations, the Payroll Specialist is responsible for ensuring the accurate and timely processing of employee payments, including managing data flow within the payroll system, approving payroll, overseeing accruals, reconciling the general ledger, and generating reports to ensure compliance. This role also manages and optimizes the Human Capital Management (HCM) system, leading technical improvements, troubleshooting issues, and providing training on system updates and best practices to enhance processes and the team member experience.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to expand your expertise in payroll systems while driving improvements in process efficiency. As you progress, you will take on more complex payroll operations responsibilities and lead initiatives focused on enhancing the Human Capital Management (HCM) system to improve processes and the team member experience.
What will you be responsible for?
As a Payroll Specialist, you will play a key role in ensuring the accurate and timely processing of employee payments by managing the seamless flow of data within the payroll system. Your key responsibilities will include:
- Approving payroll, overseeing accruals, reconciling the general ledger, and generating payroll reports to ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Ensuring compliance with organizational policies and provincial employment standards to mitigate risks and protect the organization’s reputation.
- Optimizing the HCM system to streamline payroll processes and ensure a consistent, efficient experience for team members.
- Leading technical improvements, testing and implementing new system features, and providing training to team members on system updates and best practices to enhance processes.

Education and Experience
- Payroll Compliance Professional Designation
- 7+ years of payroll experience
- Proven experience with HR systems, applications analysis and strong reporting skills (e.g., Dayforce, Workday, or similar).
- Knowledge of pension plan administration, including deductions, reporting, and regulatory requirements.
- Experience with journal entries and general ledger (G/L) reconciliations.
- Knowledge of compliance standards related to payroll, benefits, and employment standards in Alberta.
- Proven ability to streamline payroll processes and enhance operational efficiency.
