Job Summary

The Laboratory of Dr. Hilla Weidberg, in the Department of Cellular & Physiological Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, at the University of British Columbia, is looking to hire a Research Assistant/Technician 2 to join their team as soon as possible. To conduct day-to-day operations and organization and perform technical research. My lab is currently in the setup phase, and as such I am looking for someone who is excited about helping a new lab get off the ground.

Organizational Status

The position will work directly with other members of lab, including post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, senior technicians, as well as with the Principal Investigator, Dr. Hilla Weidberg. The Research Assistant/Technician will report to the PI.

Work Performed

Technical Duties:

  • Preform various molecular biology and biochemical technics such as western blot, yeast genetics, qPCR, microscopy, and mammalian cell-based assays.
  • Assist in data interpretation by summarizing and preforming statistical analysis.
  • Prepare reagents for experiments
  • Monitor use of reagents and other supplies, order lab supplies and maintain inventory
  • Establish and maintain laboratory information and data files; perform data analysis and prepare figures; present data at lab meetings
  • Provide support to research staff, postdoctoral fellows, and students
  • Maintain laboratory equipment
  • Ensure safety procedures are being followed (radioactive, chemical, and biological, etc.)
  • Other lab duties as required.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

  • Ensures procedures and protocols are adhered to.
  • Establishes priorities to complete tasks.
  • Unusual problems are referred to Principal Investigator.

Supervision Received

Works under supervision of Principal Investigator. Works independently when carrying out familiar procedures.

Supervision Given

Will be expected to initiate new employees into lab’s routines.

Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

University graduate (B.Sc. in cell biology, genetics, biochemistry or related discipline). Research experience in cell biology and/or molecular biology work. Dedication, scientific curiosity and the desire to learn as primary attributes. Effective communication, organizational, and technical skills. Proactive about organizing lab’s databases and infrastructure.
