About the role

In the Medical Imaging at St. Michael's Hospital, the Technologist Assistant (TA) will be working as part of an interdisciplinary team in the capacity of an unregulated health care provider. The TA practices under direct supervision and guidance of the Radiologist, Manager of Medical Imaging, and with direct oversight of the regulated health care professionals, either Medical Radiation Technologist (MRT) or Registered Nurse (RN). The TA will ensure an efficient workflow in the area and will be accountable to provide support to both the patient and the Technologist, as needed. As part of a multi-disciplinary team receiving day to day direction from the Operations Leader in Angiography and CT, the Technical Assistant is responsible for contributing to patient care by providing support to patients and the Medical Imaging team.

Some of the TA's responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Supporting the MRT's in their area of practice for activities such as: coordinating exam times for in-patients and Emergency Department requests, communicating necessary preparations to the floor nurse, verifying bloodwork, organizing portering, transferring patients from one area to another within Medical Imaging
  • Providing non-clinical support by prepping and cleaning scan rooms, getting supplies, restocking linen, scanning documents, etc.
  • Answer the phones and provide appropriate responses, escalate any questions to the Technologist as required
  • Work in collaboration with regulated and unregulated health care professionals in their assigned clinical area
  • Assist with patient positioning & repositioning (ex. Stretcher, imaging bed, wheelchair) including transferring patients to and from imaging table and transporting patients to and from entrances/exits
  • Facilitate patient navigation of changing rooms, belongings, gowns, etc.
  • Equipment - Assist staff with equipment quality control tests, sanitization of equipment and linen management
  • Liaises with appropriate members of the care team to identify patient care needs
  • Reports patient observations to appropriate member of the care team (Ex. comfort or safety factors)
  • orders supplies electronically as necessary, consulting with medical and administrative staff
  • Assists with setting up sterile trays
  • Cleans/disinfects soiled trays and removes and disposes of sharps
  • Other duties as assigned to support the care team

Accountabilities:

  • Booking in-patients and Emergency patients for scans, giving appointment and portering times to floors
  • Preparing the patient for the scan including assisting patient to complete forms or questionnaires
  • Must have an understanding of exams performed in the area
  • Collect patient history
  • Answering phones and tending to requests of floors/physicians
  • Identifying and escalating urgent requests, plus organizing ED/Trauma scans
  • Preparing the room with appropriate equipment and supplies
  • Clean the room and equipment post-exam

Qualifications:

  • Canadian or Internationally trained Radiation Technologist or Internationally trained physicians or candidates must have previous clinical experience or at minimum currently enrolled in: Radiological Technology (Y3), Nuclear Medicine (Y3), Ultrasound (Y2), and MRI (Y1 and Y2) academic program preferred
  • Medical terminology certificate, diploma or degree preferred
  • Strong communication skills
  • Excellent attendance record
  • Day, evening, nights, weekend, and statutory holiday shifts available. Flexible availability is preferred.
