Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Recreationist provides expertise and assistance with personal care, and for the daily delivery of programming, therapeutic recreation, spiritual, and other support services including daily living as required for seniors receiving Community Support Services. As a valued member of Long Term Care and Seniors Services, the Recreationist demonstrates a commitment to client safety by providing quality services in accordance with the organization’s mission and vision.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (not listed in order of priority)

  1. Develop, plan, implement and evaluate group programs in conjunction with the plan of care.

  2. Provide assistance or adaptations required to facilitate participation in activities including occasional weekend/evening programming as required (for Simcoe Village). For Georgian Village – 7 days/evenings.

  3. Ensure that care and services are delivered in environments that support safe client care. Ensure that processes are developed and maintained to support safe environments for all residents, visitors and staff.

  4. Assist with activities of daily living, including, medication cueing, and stockings as required.

  5. Develop and maintain professional work ethics and effective working relationships with employees, clients, families, community groups, associations, institutions and others. Ability to coach and mentor team members.

  6. Provide input into the development and revision of policies and procedures as they relate to Quality Risk Management programs.

  7. Effectively utilizes all electronic systems provided.

  8. Maintain a safe environment for activities.

  9. Provide direction to students and volunteers.

  10. Input with client care plan and RAI CHA assessment and complete documentation as required.

  11. Respond immediately to client emergencies and the emergency response system: assess the situation: if necessary acquire assistance from professional emergency service.

  12. Participates in and demonstrates an understanding of resident safety principles and practices into all day to day activities. Follows all safe work practices and procedures and immediately communicates any activity or action which may constitute a risk to resident safety.

  13. Participate in educational in-services: identify personal and group educational needs. Set personal work related goals: work toward the achievement of these goals with the Supervisor, Seniors Services.

  14. Perform other duties as assigned.

  15. Works in compliance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act and the Long Term Care Homes Act, and their regulations in performing duties in a safe manner and follows all County of Simcoe Health & Safety policies, procedures and legislation.

  16. Maintain confidentiality in accordance with the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, and the Personal health Information Protection Act.

  17. Additional duties at Georgian Village:

  • Plan three calendars of events for Village Residents.

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of programs and identify areas where new programs are needed and where improvements can be made.

  • Recruit, train and oversee volunteers for community programs.

  • Meet and collaborate with community agency’s to plan and implement community events.

  • Promote and communicate information about activities to residents and families.

  • Plan, organize, and promote, seasonal activities, special events, and daily programs. Craft sales, two resident and family Christmas parties, Family BBQ, Village entertainment, Village themed nights, and work with community agencies to plan events for residents. (children’s choirs, tanjay, guest speakers)

  • Manage relationships with fitness instructors and VON smart program and local health agencies to offer health and wellness with residents, fitness classes, and wellness days.

  • Completion of comprehensive recreational assessments on Residents of assisted living.

  • Help to organize and open village fitness centre, purchase of new fitness equipment, run monthly orientation of Fitness Centre for residents of village, maintain a roaster of users of the facility. Contact maintenance if equipment if not operational.

  • Work with local artists for the Village Art Program, having artists display their works for two months at a time, organizing different artists and promoting their works.

  • Work where needed, helping with Wardens events, upcoming special events,

  • Work and meet with families to make sure the needs of the residents are met with changing health concerns.

EDUCATION, TECHNICAL SKILLS AND CERTIFICATION

  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in Recreation and Leisure studies, Therapeutic Recreation, Kinesiology or other related field from a community college or university; or

  • Enrolled in a community college or university in a diploma or degree program (mentioned above) that will be completed within three years of being hired.

  • Personal Support Worker Certificate an asset.

  • A valid Ontario “F” driver’s license and a clean driver’s abstract is required.

  • Ability to work with others in an inter-professional care team.

  • Good physical condition to meet the physical demands of the position.

  • Proof of annual CPR recertification.

  • Effectiveness working with minimal supervision with proven reliability and trustworthiness.

  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Good leadership and organizational skills.

  • Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening that is less than six (6) months old at time of hire.

  • As a condition of employment, candidates are required to submit documentedresults of TB testing, as per Public Health requirements.

  • Bilingualism in English and French is considered an asset (Georgian Village only).

EXPERIENCE

  • No experience necessary with the required education.

EFFORT

  • Some physical effort will be required when assisting clients with activities and daily living.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • May be exposed to illnesses/viruses while working with clients.
