About the role

Department Summary The Major Gifts team is a dynamic, diversified, driven and talented team of fundraising professionals who work collaboratively to achieve revenue targets, and other agreed financial and non-financial goals, in support of St. Michael’s Hospital and Providence Healthcare (SMPF). The team is responsible for mid-level, major, transformational and planned giving philanthropy, and builds the public profile of the Foundation and its campaign priorities by engaging with donors and volunteers to secure philanthropic investment in these priorities.

St. Michael's and Providence Foundation is the exclusive fundraising organization to generate and manage philanthropic funds for St. Michael’s Hospital and Providence Healthcare, within Unity Health Toronto. Through multiple lines of fundraising income generation and stewardship activity, SMPF, in conjunction with Unity Health Toronto, will define and promote the St. Michael’s and Providence brands to maximize philanthropic revenue to fuel their healthcare, research, teaching and health equity missions. Position Summary The Associate Vice President, Major Gifts (SMH) is a senior leader at St. Michael’s and Providence Foundation, responsible for leading, managing, and coaching a team of frontline fundraisers to achieve ambitious revenue targets across key campaign areas. Reporting to the Vice President, Major and Planned Gifts, the AVP will oversee a portfolio of fundraising initiatives (“campaigns”) relating to the strategic funding priorities of the St. Michael’s Hospital site. The incumbent will, over time, take on a small, focused portfolio of donor relations to manage, but will primarily be focused on working with the team to achieve results through leadership, coaching, and management of others, collaborating on each of the campaign or fundraising areas to achieve success collectively as a team. Accordingly, goals will be developed to reflect overall team achievement, not the individual fundraising results of the incumbent.

Responsibilities & Activities Team Leadership and Management:

  • Work with Vice President, Major and Planned Gifts, and Associate Vice President, Research and Innovation Fundraising on the development of strategy and operational plans to support campaign planning and development.
  • Lead, mentor, and support a team of frontline fundraisers to drive individual and team performance in achieving annual and multi-year revenue goals.
  • Provide ongoing coaching, goal setting, and performance management to foster professional growth and accountability.
  • Support team members in developing tailored strategies for cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding donors at the major and transformational gift levels.
  • Act as an Ambassador throughout the community, representing the Hospital and the Foundation.
  • Abide by the policies and procedures of Unity Health Toronto and St. Michael’s and Providence Foundation.
  • Abide by the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and work in a manner that is safe, reporting incidents immediately to direct supervisor.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in order to meet the overall goals and objectives of the Foundation.
  • Operate within the culture and core values of the organization.

Fundraising Activities

  • Work at the strategic level with the Vice President, Major and Planned Gifts to set and execute fundraising strategies that support St. Michael's Hospital.
  • Oversee the execution of fundraising strategies across assigned campaign areas.
  • Collaborate with Foundation leadership to align donor engagement strategies with hospital priorities.
  • Track and report on revenue performance and forecasting.
  • Work closely with the AVP, Campaign Operations to fully understand the Hospital's funding priorities and establish productivity and campaign reporting for the MG team.
  • Work collaboratively with the AVP, Research and Innovation Fundraising to coordinate proposals for research (biomedical, Predictive Analytics) that cross into campaign areas.
  • Manage a small, focused set of donor relationships, to, along with other members of the senior team, ensure impeccable support of our highest net worth supporters.
  • Work with the Director, Stewardship & Donor Relations to implement effective stewardship strategies to foster and strengthen relationships with existing donors and supporters.

Knowledge & Skills

  • A University degree or a combination of comparable skills and experience.
  • Must have a minimum of 10 years of fundraising and campaign experience with a proven track record in cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Must have a minimum of 7 years of senior leadership and management experience, leading a team and executing on fundraising strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully manage multiple priorities and diverse areas.
  • Ability to initiate, analyze, monitor, evaluate and alter strategic fundraising and stewardship plans.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and ability to communicate in a compelling manner with audiences of all sizes.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Experience collaborating with senior volunteers and volunteer committees/boards in a wide range of capacities.
  • Ability to work with senior leaders, physicians, and other foundations effectively and collaboratively.
  • Understanding of the healthcare delivery system in Ontario.
  • Exemplary attention to detail with excellent planning, organizational and time management skills.
  • Enjoys working in a fast paced, dynamic organization with the ability to relate to a variety of personality and communication styles.
