Day Shifts: Monday – Friday**,** 0730-1530, 0800-1600, 0830-1630, 0900-1700

Pay Band: Band-S $32.64 - $36.17 per hour

Union: CUPE

Location: Hotel Dieu Hospital Site & KidsInclusive Brockville sites (direct service in schools in KFLA and LLG regions)

In accordance with Article 9.05, where the previous incumbent returns to this position within the thirty (30) day trial period this position shall be deemed not vacant and the posting will be cancelled. Should the vacancy be cancelled, applicants to this posting shall be notified.

However, this does not guarantee the permanence of the shift time or work assignment for the position. The Hospital reserves its Management Rights under the CUPE Collective Agreement to make changes to shift time and work assignment as it deems necessary.

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

As an integral member of the Clinical Support Team at KidsInclusive the Therapy Assistant - CDA provides clinical support under the supervision of a Speech & Language Pathologist (SLP). The Therapy Assistant - CDA assists in the provision of direct client care as directed by the SLP; provides departmental clinical support as requested; supports departmental efforts in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities and participates in education orientation as required.

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides clinical therapy – Under the direction of an SLP, the CDA develops and implements a variety of developmentally appropriate interventions; provides regular feedback to SLP regarding progress of client toward goals; promptly consults with SLP regarding any concerns and/or questions regarding the client, therapy goals or treatment protocol; develops and provides follow-up intervention services based on SLP recommendation. Supports Group Programs –assists with organizing and delivering group programs or parent workshops (contact families, book space, prepare and send out information packages, co-lead groups, collect family feedback). Involves parents/caregivers in intervention programs and educates/coaches parents in techniques which promote the development of their child's communication skills. Complies with KI clinical workload expectations/ benchmarks (number of direct service hours).

  • Documents – the CDA documents involvement in client care in a timely and accurate manner in accordance with KI/ KHSC standards and requirements; documents progress of intervention and maintain communication with supervising clinician as per college guidelines.

  • Admin Responsibilities – Maintain a record of all daily activities as required by KidsInclusive; ensure maintenance of all client information in accordance with privacy legislation and KHSC/KI policies; participate in team meetings, discipline meetings and KidsInclusive meetings as required; provide mentoring/ student placement and shadowing opportunities as requested by management; provide input to the development of department and or hospital quality improvement procedures as requested; complies with relevant statistical, clinical and administrative reporting requirements and policies and procedures.

  • Education – Maintain a standard of professional education by attending educational programs and workshops and transmit information obtained from these workshops to fellow employees; complete e-learning modules as required by KHSC/KidsInclusive policies; collaborates in the development and delivery of educational activities that support knowledge development in the community; encourages early recognition of communication disorders and appropriate responses, to promote the development of communication skills in preschool children.

  • Provide coverage for other therapy assistants as requested by management.

  • Additional responsibilities as requested by management.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Communicative Disorders Assistant diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience in early childhood development and speech/language disorders.

  • Experience working in an intervention role with preschool and/or school-aged children, and their parents. (preferred)

  • Demonstrated knowledge of speech and Language development, including that of children with physical and developmental delays

  • Experience working with children who use Augmentative Communication Systems

  • Experience working in a Children’s Treatment Centre or comparable community based pediatric setting

  • Experience working in an adjuvant role; demonstrated ability to perform work defined by established procedures or practice and follow instructions accurately

  • Computer experience with speech and language modalities an asset (eg: Boardmaker); Basic Computer skills (ex; Outlook, word processing).

  • Creativity in the preparation of materials in planning activities

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills demonstrated by the ability to interact, collaborate, and communicate clearly in an effective manner with children, families, and members of the interdisciplinary team

  • Excellent organizational skills; ability to multi-task

  • Has current Criminal Reference Check (CRC) that includes a Vulnerable Sector Search administered by the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC)

  • Proven good attendance record

  • Access to a reliable personal vehicle along with a valid driver’s license and automobile insurance as per KHSC policy

  • Proven ability to attend work regularly.

  • Satisfactory criminal reference check and vulnerable sector search required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The applicant must be able to meet the physical demands of this position.
