About the role

The Department of Clinical Neurosciences in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for an Animal Care Technician. This Part-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Senior Technician & Lab Manager.

The Lab Technician's primary purpose is to assist the Senior Technician and Principle Investigator by providing animal care and assessment, and to perform skilled technical and surgical procedures.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Assess health of animal colony, if treatment is required, notify senior technician, and animal facility veterinarian
  • Determine and suggest treatment required
  • Set up aseptic operating suite for daily sterile surgery
  • Prepare meds, instruments, and equipment for surgical procedure
  • Assist and become able to anesthetize, intubate, and maintain (anesthetic) animals for surgery
  • Monitor animals during surgical procedure ‿ establish ECG, arterial pressure, temperature, etc.
  • Learn, and eventually independently perform surgical procedures related to vessel catheterization, aneurysm creation, endovascular aneurysm treatment, and histological tissue retrieval
  • Recover animals from anesthetic, and monitor for post-op complications
  • Report complications as required
  • Maintain regular post-op monitoring until animal has recovered from surgery
  • Required to prepare and administer oral medications and assist with other treatment activities
  • Clean, organize, and maintain laboratory space
  • Maintain basic and specialized laboratory instruments and equipment
  • Follow and maintain all University safety procedures and requirements

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Registered Veterinary Technician, Bachelors Degree or Equivalent
  • 2-5 years of related experience with a minimum 1-3 years of experience in a veterinary clinic, or animal research facility
  • Ability to learn to perform complex surgical procedures
  • Ability to provide technical support for other team members through advice on technical lab issues
  • Extensive knowledge of animal health and physiology, and the practical application of technical procedures and techniques
  • Must be open to learning and development, and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments
  • Operate and maintain complex technical equipment
  • Experience with various biological samples (eg. blood, tissues, urine, etc)
  • Basic computer skills are required for some data collection, material purchasing, accounting, and protocols and procedure documentation
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), Internet skills
  • Knowledge of University core business systems is desirable
