Chaplain

The Chaplain provides spiritual care to individuals in the MU in accordance with The Salvation Army mission, values, and standards.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Chaplain is responsible and accountable for providing spiritual care services utilizing professional and program standards that respect all faiths/spiritualities/cultures, within the scope of The Salvation Army mission.

Program and Service Responsibilities:

• Provide spiritual and religious care to participants, clients and staff on a multi-faith, multicultural basis to meet the overall goals of spiritual and religious care (SRC) as established by The Salvation Army.
• In consultation with the Executive Director, coordinate and facilitate programs to maintain delivery of SRC to participants, clients and staff including personal visitation, chapel services, memorial services, etc.
• Participate in the development of goals and objectives for spiritual care programs as well as evaluation process for continued improvement
• Provide regular reports to Executive Director.
• Assist as needed in preparation of reviews, spiritual care literature, reports etc.
• Ensure information is provided to participants, clients and staff regarding available spiritual and religious care.
• Have knowledge of other faith groups' beliefs and practices and maintain a connection to community faith and spiritual group leaders for appropriate referrals and support as needed.
• Provide support to participants, clients and staff on site and ensure availability for emergencies and/or "on call" as needed.
• Conduct/complete spiritual assessments and develop/document a spiritual care plan.
• Record required spiritual & religious care information as needed in appropriate record system (Pathway of Hope).
• Maintain confidentiality and respect the client's right to privacy and freedom of choice
• Maintain standards of The Salvation Army, and Professional Practice Standards for spiritual care delivery.

Human Resources:

• May assist in oversight of spiritual care volunteers, community clergy and outside groups as needed

Health and Safety:

• Work in compliance with Provincial regulations and abide by health and safety policies and procedures.

Internal relationships:

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Executive Director, Corps Officers, Program Managers, participants, clients, staff, interdisciplinary teams, other chaplains, volunteers.

External relationships:

Community Clergy, Community faith-based groups

MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY:

• This position reports to the Executive Director, Charlottetown Homelessness Services or designate
• Annual PEAC review will be completed by Executive Director, Charlottetown Homelessness Services or designate.
• computer literacy with word processing, spreadsheet, and database skills.

Working Conditions:

• 25 hours per week.
• The working conditions are such that to meet the operational needs, job flexibility is required as it relates to hours of work and work schedule.
• On call and/or being on site outside of regular hours during times of need or emergency
• Normal location of work Charlottetown Homelessness Services sites
• Attendance at staff and/or departmental meetings as scheduled
• Minimal travel required.

The above responsibilities must be discharged in accordance with The Salvation Army's Mission Statement, in a professional manner, exemplifying Christian standards of conduct.

• Theological/biblical training from an accredited university, theological school, or seminary.
• Ordination or good standing in one's faith community
• Spiritual care and/or pastoral counselling experience
• Specialized training with a recognized chaplaincy or spiritual care education body (i.e. Spiritual & Religious Care Certificate from Booth University College or equivalent and/or minimum of 2 Units of Clinical Pastoral Education (i.e. CASC) and/or combination of education & experience that includes a minimum of 1 Unit of Clinical Pastoral Education.)

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements

• Minimum 1-year experience in spiritual/religious care and/or equivalent experience
• Additional education, training and experience an asset

• Knowledge of and sensitivity to multifaith groups and practices
• Maintain own professional and personal development through attendance and participation in continuous education programs, In-services, workshops etc.
• Adhere to all Salvation Army policies, directives, and operating guidelines.
• Strong interpersonal, time management and oral and written communication skills.
• Demonstrate a high level of integrity, good judgment, and ability to maintain appropriate confidentiality.
• Attentive listening skills.
• Establish and maintain positive working relationships with others, both internally and externally, to achieve the goals of the organization.
• Be able to lift/move up to 20 pounds as required.
• Valid Driver's License, personal vehicle required and insurance, current copy of driver's abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
• Provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening and Enhanced Security Clearance that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required. The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment.
• Screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
