Job Description

BBA has an opportunity for an intermediate civil designer in the Calgary office engineering team. This role is highly technical and is aligned with BBA’s reputation as engineers who can solve the client’s tougher problems and find more creative solutions. You will be responsible for preparing excavation drawings, dam and powerhouse general arrangements, finished and rough grade drawings, and surface drainage drawings. In addition, you will focus on providing quality service and create positive connections with all clients.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • 3D Modelling, surface generation
  • Point cloud data, GPS and other data imports
  • Preparation of 3D layouts using Civil 3D, design plans and specifications
  • Create alignments, profiles and sections, volume reports, isometrics
  • Perform routine inspections or technical surveys
  • Participate in creating mass and energy balances using simulation software
  • Participate, where required, in various work phases, at the office or on site
  • Collect and compile operational and experimental data, and assist in the preparation of estimates, schedules, and budgets
  • When required, take part in supervision, testing and commissioning of engineering solutions
  • Working closely with engineers, technicians, technologists and project managers in planning, preparing, and evaluation of document and drawing packages, report figures, design concepts, technical specifications and calculations


  • Diploma in Civil Engineering Design Technology
  • 5 + years of relevant design experience
  • Strong knowledge in Civil 3D
  • Civil drafting and design experience within a consulting engineering environment
  • Ability to verify 2D drawings and 3D models for constructability with other disciplines
  • Experience in hydroelectric projects and/or heavy industrial/ municipal infrastructure projects or related design experience
  • Ability to interpret complex drawings that incorporate interfacing structural design requirements with piping/mechanical, electrical and other aspects of industrial work
  • Advanced knowledge of preventive measures, health and safety rules at work and hazardous material regulations in the workplace
  • Adhering to established design guidelines and procedures
  • Maintaining accurate design files for reference purposes
  • Advanced knowledge of computer-aided design
