HOURS: The normal workweek is Monday to Friday; 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; comprised of 7.5 paid hours and 0.5 hours unpaid lunch break per day.

Responsibilities

Position Purpose Summary:

The Correctional Mental Health Worker supervises and counsels residents in residential settings and delivers programs.

BASIC FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The Correctional Mental Health Worker supervises and counsels residents in a therapeutic residential setting.
  • Develops and implements case management interventions.
  • Maintains and updates all appropriate documentation related to residents; completes all reports required by the Ministry and The Salvation Army.
  • Coordinates and facilitates resident programming as required.
  • Performs intake and discharge procedures for residents as assigned.
  • Models and supervises daily life skills of residents; supervises resident chores and conducts room inspections.
  • Performs regular spot checks of residents on passes in community; escorts residents in the community when necessary and monitors behaviour.
  • Provides expertise, professional advice and recommendations to support the development and implementation of a comprehensive mental health treatment plan.
  • Provides psych education, counselling and support to clients coping with a variety of diagnosis and potential concurrent disorders.
  • Completes comprehensive assessments on mental, physical, spiritual and psycho-social needs of clients, therapeutic brief and crisis oriented counselling, individual and group counselling, program delivery, education and awareness, discharge planning.
  • Dispenses medication to Harbour Light clients as necessary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education/Certifications:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Criminology/Social Work or a related field with a focus on additional training and/or education in Mental Health.
  • Training and education relating to substance abuse an asset, especially an I.C.A.D.C. certificate or equivalent.
  • Current certification in First Aid/CPR (or willing to be trained)
  • Criminal Record Review Program clearance

Experience:

  • Minimum 1-3 years’ experience in a correctional setting
  • Must have an understanding of, and experience working with, the Criminal Justice System in a correctional setting.
  • Minimum of one year experience working directly with individuals who have been diagnosed with a serious and persistent mental illness.

Required Skills/Knowledge:

  • Willingness to adhere to the Mission and values of the Harbour Light Corrections Department and of The Salvation Army.
  • Ability to work with individuals with a diverse criminal background.
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively with a non-judgemental attitude, as well as possess and exercise good interpersonal relationship skills by displaying tact, courtesy and patience with residents, staff, visitors and volunteers.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, and superior organization and administration skills.
  • Experience in Microsoft Office and strong computer skills.
  • Qualify for and be willing to obtain enhance security clearance.

  • Detail-oriented with a high level of accuracy and document creation
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and a variety of demands in a fast-paced environment
  • Flexible, self-motivated, adaptable

Successful candidates, prior to hiring, may be required to provide:

  • A valid Class 5 (or higher) BC Driver’s License and a clean driver’s abstract
  • Criminal Record Review Program clearance
  • Completion of our online Armatus Abuse Training and required Health and Safety training
