Summary: Under the direction of the General Superintendent, the Grade Foreperson is responsible for managing a construction crew and monitoring performance while ensuring that safety standards are adhered to on site. This position will be responsible for conducting layout and stake out of self-performing works & monitoring and tracking progression of work up to and including collecting as-built information. There is potential to provide room and board to qualified candidates who are not local.


  • Provide leadership to the Crew
  • Ensure all products meet specifications
  • Perform administrative tasks, including tracking quantities for production and payment
  • Manage client relationships in a professional and productive manner
  • Setup and operation of levels for layout & stakeout of various project or quarry work sites
  • Survey and preparation of as-built drawings including roads, parking lots, driveways, and excavations
  • Create grade sheets and as-built construction reports
  • Collect, organize and record information
  • Help prepare drawings, charts, plans, records, and documents
  • Calculate layout from digital design files or PDF drawings
  • Perform construction layout as required, in coordination with grading and paving crews
  • Perform quantity surveys as required
  • Set and maintain site benchmarks as required
  • Remain flexible with work assignments and resources such as equipment and materials
  • Conduct ‘tail gate’ safety talks with staff to review policies and practices
  • Ensure safety practices are followed by the crew
  • Review documents, ensuring accuracy and completion
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Lead hand/supervisory experience
  • Experience in a surveying or grade person role; construction and engineering surveying experience is a strong asset
  • Experience in road construction, fine grading, setting grade or other related activities is an asset
  • Effective leadership skills and the ability to engage and manage a crew
  • Ability to interpret and use information from graphic drawings and measurements taken in the field
  • Effective communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Basic computer knowledge, an asset
  • Valid driver’s license to support the travel requirements for this position
  • Willingness to work extended hours and weekends, when required
