The Wawanesa Life Insurance Company is seeking top talent to join its Marketing team in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Reporting to the Manager, Group Underwriting and Policy Administration, the Group Specialist reviews escalated administrative and claim inquires for further internal review and is responsible for maintaining the commission application and payment processes. The Group Specialist Interacts with field staff, Underwriters and external customers to provide information in response to administrative, commission, and other general inquiries.


  • Reviews administrative decisions escalated through our plan administration partner and determines the appropriate handling method.
  • Assists in developing and maintaining internal process manuals and decision documentation as well as administrative documents for plan administrators and business partners.
  • Collaborates with other departments to ensure process or decision changes affecting other teams are communicated along with providing any necessary resulting process change recommendations.
  • Supports customers paying with credit card by answering questions and processing payments while ensuring proper handling of sensitive information is always followed.
  • Completes monthly invoices by preparing supporting documentation and reports and receiving managerial sign off.
  • Tracks team KPIs such as email and call volume information in the department database and recommends opportunities for efficiencies.
  • Provides support by assisting with preparing and sending contract and booklet documents.
  • Maintains a good understanding and knowledge of administrative and claims adjudication processes.
  • Assists in the day to day administration of groups identified for special handling.
  • Processes daily mail ensuring proper handling and distribution to appropriate departments.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Post-secondary education in a related field.
  • Minimum three years’ work experience in the group insurance industry.
  • Detailed understanding of group insurance principles.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills with an emphasis on Word and Excel.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to communicate at the right level for the intended audience, including internal and external customers through written and verbal communication.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to identify relevant information and potential impacts.
  • Demonstrated ability to show initiative with strong problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Bilingualism an asset.
