Job Summary

Working for the City means you are part of something big, something special! We are looking for dedicated and passionate individuals who enjoy working with children who live with a disability, are between 4-12 years of age and require one-to- one support to participate in our camp program. Working with the City of Mississauga’s Recreation Team you will make a positive difference for a child and their family by assisting in creating a positive recreation day camp experience.

Please note: Due to the uncertainty we are facing regarding the COVID-19 pandemic and the City's programming restrictions, the recruitment of this position is dependent on available vacancies and business needs.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Greet participant at designated location each morning
  • Provide supervision and support to participant (4-12 years of age) in camp activities for the day
  • Provide verbal prompting for basic personal care as required (i.e. bathroom, changing and feeding needs)
  • Implement strategies on the Individual Recreation Plan as outlined
  • Advocate for the participant during activities to ensure group participation where possible
  • Monitor participant's participation in program and make additional modifications/ accommodations as needed
  • Facilitate friendships by encouraging social interactions between participant, other campers and staff
  • Manage various behaviours that may include ongoing physical aggression and verbal outbursts
  • Maintain open and honest communication with parents/caregivers, camp staff and supervisor(s) regarding the participants and their experience at camp
  • Prioritize preventative measures, problem solve and ask for assistance as required
  • Debrief with parents/caregivers each morning and at the end of each day clearly identifying areas of the day that went well and areas where behaviour management was necessary, ensuring parents receive a clear understanding of the day.
  • Implement High Five principles
  • Provide feedback to supervisor to ensure continuous improvement of camp experiences for all
  • Facilitators must go in the water and stay within arms reach of their participants each day
  • Understand, communicate and incorporate policies and procedures of City of Mississauga as required
  • Perform other duties as required
  • Employees may be assigned to any location within Mississauga or re-deployed to various locations/shifts or assigned a variety of job responsibilities on a day-to-day basis.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Current Emergency First Aid/CPR B Certificate from the following organizations: Lifesaving Society, Canadian Red Cross Society, St. John’s Ambulance, or Canadian Ski Patrol prior to start of contract. Certification must remain current for the full extend of the employment period.
  • HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Child Development Certification required
  • Experience working with children with disabilities in a recreation setting/camp setting
  • Working towards Secondary School Graduation Diploma or Post-Secondary courses/degree/diploma in Education, Social Work, Child and Youth Work, Recreation and Leisure, Disability Studies, and/or related discipline
  • Light lifting required
  • A Level 3 - Vulnerable Sector Check will be required of the successful candidate, as a condition of employment, at their own expense, to verify the absence of a criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted prior to start of contract
  • BMS, NCVI, and/or training specific to autism spectrum disorder or similar training is an asset
  • Completion of a swimming test to determine supervision ability in the water
  • Willingness to learn and practice blocking techniques to address physical aggression and strategies to address verbal aggression.

Additional Information:
• The duties and responsibilities of the Facilitator are reflected in the hourly rate of pay of $15.01-$16.69
• Staff will be paid on an hourly basis for attending required trainings or completing online trainings at a training rate of $14.25

• Employment period is from June 6th, 2021- Sept 3rd 2021
• Proposed training offered between June 6-June 27th mandatory staff training maybe scheduled on various evenings and weekends
• June 28-September 3rd, 2021 provision of one on one support
• Hours are not guaranteed. Work schedule is dependent on sufficient participant registration and subject to program cancellation.

Interviews will be held virtually and tentatively scheduled for late April/May.
