The Dentons Ottawa Litigation and Dispute Resolution Group is seeking a Legal Assistant with 2+ years’ of experience. The position will require a confident, reliable and business-minded team player with the ability to manage multiple tasks and adapt to changing priorities.
The successful candidate will be organized, discreet, detail-oriented, and have a client-first approach to work. The person in this role will demonstrate this commitment through taking an active interest in all aspects of our client requirements. We are committed to providing exceptional service levels to the lawyers and our clients.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Drafting, preparing, typing and proofreading of correspondence, pleadings, briefs, various litigation documents and court forms.
• Arranging for service and filing of documents and related instructions to articling students/process servers/agents, and for periodic acceptance of service of documents.
• Preparing and maintaining a bring-forward system and diarizing filing deadlines, court dates, examinations for discovery, meetings, and appointments.
• Conducting basic legal and business intelligence research using online resources, under the direction of legal professionals.
• Managing electronic and hard copy files and records on a day-to-day basis per the policy of the firm and maintaining precedent systems.
• Preparing retainer agreements, opening client matters and maintaining the matter list.
• Dealing with and responding to client and/or Court staff inquiries and conducting follow up as required.
• Entering and maintaining on a timely basis lawyer’s dockets in Elite.
• Communicating with colleagues in the firm on behalf of the assistant’s legal professionals, scheduling appointments and meetings, photocopying materials, booking meeting rooms, making travel arrangements, etc.
• Actively provide back-up support to the other legal assistants and lawyers within the work team in accordance with the firm’s standards and best practices.
• Other duties to support the Litigation Group as required.

REQUIREMENTS
• Bilingualism (English and French) is an asset.
• Post-secondary education in business or related discipline (Legal Administration and/or Law Clerk Diploma preferred);
• 2+ years’ experience in a similar role with working knowledge of Litigation Law (preferred);
• Knowledge of civil litigation procedures, sound understanding of the Rules of Civil Procedure and related Forms, and Practice Directions.
• Knowledge of accounting/docketing systems and data management systems (Elite and DeskSite).
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written) with the ability to maintain excellent customer service by handling questions and concerns with professionalism;
• Strong follow up and proofreading skills, attention to detail, and accuracy;
• Ability to work under pressure and complete accurate work in a timely fashion while maintaining a positive, team driven attitude;
• Seasoned problem solving skills and the ability to work with little instruction or supervision;
• Excellent technical proficiency in Microsoft Office applications;
• Knowledge of accounting/docketing systems and data management systems (preferred); and
• Demonstrated commitment to privacy and ethical conduct.
