The Opportunity
Athletics & Recreation
The Athletics & Recreation department is an innovative student and staff-centered department designed to enhance the SAIT experience through sports, activities, courses and extracurricular events. The SAIT Trojans are represented in five major sports, competing with great success at the collegiate level. SAIT Recreation has a wide range of programs and facilities for staff, students and the public with the goal of supporting active and healthy lifestyles.
Reporting to the Aquatic Team Leader, the Aquatic Lifeguard supports the Athletic and Recreation department at SAIT with their dedicated delivery of administrative support, lifeguarding and swim instruction. Demonstrating leadership in a team based environment, and exhibiting excellent interpersonal and communications skills to ensure that optimum safety standards and procedures are met and practiced.
Note: This is a temporary role until June 30, 2020 and requires the ability to work mornings, evenings and weekends.
The Role
- Supports the department by ensuring all required Aquatics and organizational policies are adhered to
- Assists with implementing and managing aquatic maintenance requirements and procedures in conjunction with the Aquatics Team Lead
- Supports and performs cleaning and maintenance requirements and needs on the pool deck
- Assists in administering lessons programs by ensuring a high level of instruction is provided in all aquatics programs while meeting the goals of the Red Cross Water Safety Program
- Plays a part in ensuring all safety precautions and standards are adhered to and met by program participants, members, patrons and staff in conjunction with the Aquatics Team
- Provides positive ongoing public relations and public education to patrons and participants as required within the scope of the job
- Manages and resolves conflict and customer concerns in a positive manner
- Supports the Aquatics team with shift coverage, scheduling and breaks when needed
- Delivers first aid response to the aquatic area for emergency First Aids and CPR and to the facility if required
- Makes sure all safety precautions and standards in place and adhered to by staff, members and program participants
Qualifications
- Security Clearance with vulnerable Sector search mandatory. Current within the last three months
- Current Certifications for:
- National Lifeguard Certification (NL)
- Swim and Lifesaving Instructor Certification (LSI), considered an asset
- Water Safety Instructor (WSI)
- Standard First Aid and Level C CPR/AED Certification
- WHMIS
- Pool Operator 1, considered an asset
- One year experience is required
- Familiarity with the CLASS software system and the SAIT and Banner would be an asset
