Job Overview

The Manager, Investment Accounting is responsible for leading investment accounting staff and delivering investment accounting and reporting. They support investment policy by researching the accounting and tax impact of upcoming and potential changes.

Job Responsibilities

  • Reviews and delivers the consolidated investment accounting, tax, regulatory reporting, and reporting to rating agencies for The Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company.
  • Reviews and delivers financial statements of the pension plans for The Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company and Wawanesa General Insurance Company. Coordinates with the auditors and actuaries of the pension plans to ensure completion and filing of the statements.
  • Leads investment accounting staff.
  • Supports company investment policy by researching the accounting and tax impact of potential changes.
  • Researches, and prepares position papers on changing accounting and regulatory standards.
  • Develops and implements changes to investment accounting systems and processes resulting from policy, regulatory, or accounting standard changes.
  • Drafts new financial statement note disclosures required for investments and pension plans.
  • Maintains effective internal controls over the financial reporting of the company’s investments and pension plans.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree and professional accounting designation (CPA or equivalent).
  • Completion of one or more levels of the CFA Charter or interest in pursuing the CFA charter would be an asset.
  • Minimum 7 years of accounting experience with increasing responsibilities, including supervisory responsibilities.
  • Excellent leadership skills with ability to build and develop strong teams, gain respect, credibility and confidence from others.
  • Excellent interpersonal, presentation and communication skills with the ability to effectively convey complex ideas in a simple, persuasive and eloquent manner
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver quality work in a fast-paced environment within tight timelines.
  • Knowledge of IFRS and demonstrated ability to analyze the impact of changing accounting standards.
  • Proficient in the use of MS Excel.
  • Effective team player who possesses strong problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Previous experience in a financial reporting, investment accounting, hedge accounting, investment operations, knowledge of IFRS 9, are assets.
