Position Summary

This role is Hybrid in Ottawa and/or Halifax.

Thales is looking for an Marine Electrical Systems Technical Specialist and Life Cycle Materiel Manager to be responsible for engineering support and technical oversight of various Electrical Systems on board the AOPS and JSS class ships including Power Generation, Distribution, and Controls Systems. Accountable to the AJISS Engineering Services Manager and working directly with the AJISS Electrical Services Engineer and the rest of the AJISS Engineering and Supportability Team, this role will support various activities to establish and maintain the configuration and design intent of electrical systems on the ship and manage any changes.

The successful candidate will leverage their existing knowledge and expertise in marine electrical systems and equipment to become a subject matter expert and main point of contact for all technical matters associated with the systems assigned thereto.

Key Areas of Responsibility

The key functions and areas of responsibility for the Electrical Systems Technical Specialist / LCMM include the following:

  • Providing technical support of deficiencies of equipment or capability, developing technical solutions and risk assessments.
  • Providing technical advice to enable electrical and electronic equipment and/or systems to be correctly operated or maintained.
  • Conducting technical investigations into problems associated with marine electrical and electronic systems, equipment and/or software issues, including failure analysis and solution recommendation.
  • Developing and reviewing technical documentation including equipment specifications, installation and maintenance instructions, test and trials agendas, and engineering change documentation and drawings.
  • Investigating and formulating plans to deal with equipment obsolescence and material compatibility issues, conducting alternate part investigations and approvals.
  • Analyzing requirements with baseline changes to the ships configuration, equipment and software.
  • Preparing Work Packages and cost estimates for customer approval.
  • Liaise with OEMs, Service Providers and ship staff to support the investigation and resolution of defects.
  • Preparing documented work scopes, suitable for the solicitation of quotations from external resources such as OEMs, manufacturers, suppliers, testing facilities or specialist service providers;
  • Supporting and managing activities associated with the design and configuration control of electrical and electronic systems including conducting functional and physical configuration audits, and deviations and waivers documentation and risk assessments.
  • Supporting software management changes and development of requirements documentation.

Minimum Requirements

  • Industrial Electrician Canadian Red Seal or Military QL5 certification in an approved Electrical Trade.
  • Possess a minimum of 5 years of demonstrated technical professional work experience in the marine/offshore sector within the last 10 years.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Familiar with electrical safety standards.
  • Strong communication skills (oral and written).
  • Language: English (Essential).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum 10 years of experience as a Technical Specialist with marine power generation and distribution systems.
  • Previous experience with the Royal Canadian Navy or Canadian Coast Guard.
  • Previous experience as a Life Cycle Materiel Manager in the marine electrical field.
  • Demonstrated project management experience.
  • Experience in delivering marine in-service support of operational assets.
  • Familiar with certification requirements including but not limited to Classification Society, SOLAS/IMO, IEEE, CSA, Naval Ship Code, and DND regulations is an asset.

Physical Demands

  • Predominantly office work but will be required to occasionally travel to and work in dockyards and onboard Naval ships.
  • May be required to undertake inspections on Naval ships which may involve involving bending and twisting, and working aloft.

Regulatory Compliance Requirements:

  • Requires direct or indirect access to hardware, software, technology or technical data controlled under the Canadian Export Control List, the ITAR or the EAR.
  • Requires a positive Controlled Goods assessment as you will have direct access to hardware, software, technology or technical data controlled under the Canadian Controlled Goods Program.
  • Required to obtain and maintain a Security Clearance at the NATO Secret Level.
