This role is a permanent full time role, and will be part of the leadership team at Nootka Marine Adventures and is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of vessels at Moutcha Bay Resort, Nootka Sound Resort and Newton Cove Resort. This role also oversees, dock operations, fish processing and fleet maintenance.


Responsibilities include but not limited to:

Safety:

  • Ensures all guides and vessel operators are professional, experienced and hold all current certifications required, focused on continued learning for all team members.
  • Ensure all crews well trained, training documented and safety drills are done regularly and as required inclusive MOB, fire and other drills to ensure all staff are well versed with their roles in an emergency.
  • Work with General Manager and third parties to update all operating policies and procedures and continual review of these procedures pre and post season.

Asset Management:

  • Inform the General Manager in case of any breakdown, operational issues which may have financial/operational/environmental/HSQE related and/or reputational impact to the company.
  • Coordinate efficient and safe opening and closing of each marina inclusive to docks, inventory, and vessel storage.
  • Ensure all vessels are checked in between each trip for cleanliness and proper working equipment, that all safety equipment is on board and in good repair. Ensure that guided fishing trips and rental boats bookings account for the time required for proper and efficient checks.
  • Work closely with the General Manager to ensure the budget process is inclusive to priority repairs and replacements and a continual 5 year plan is maintained.
  • Ensure that that capital inventory list is accurate and up to date at all times as part of monthly accounting.

Community:

  • The Marine Operations Manager is involved in stakeholder meetings for our areas and industry and may play a role in establishing sponsorship opportunities with vendors and stakeholders alike.
    Embraces "Sharing Fearlessly" and ensures that all communication is timely, honest, professional, and representative of company philosophies. Ensure that all marine operations staff are respectful of stakeholders, partners, guests, vendors and coworkers.
  • Assists in sustainability programs inclusive of DFO counts and studies and this role supports fundraising opportunities for the Nootka Sound Watershed Society and other organizations supporting sustainability.
  • Together with the General Manager, works closely with the Mowachaht/Muchalaht First nation and other nations in the areas in which we operate to forge great relations and continued collaboration.

Sales/Marketing:

  • The Marine Operations Manager may be called upon to be the voice of Nootka Marine Adventures for sport fishing related marketing communications with the media, government, and associations. Industry expertise for content or scripting for print, radio, television in conjunction with the General Manager may be required.
  • Participate in end of season review meetings and provide insight and feedback on booking procedures, sales, and marketing activities, discussing what went well and how we can improve offerings or make operations more efficient.
  • Write fishing reports/review and update and work with the marketing team to compile photos for marketing purposes during the season. In some cases, assist with the familiarization tours for influencers, key clients and industry partners.

People

  • Recruit, train, supervise, and schedule guides, marina staff, fish processing and fleet maintenance staff, working with the General Manager and Moutcha Bay Resort Manager.
  • Conduct timely employee reviews, recognize excellence in performance and acknowledge team members for their achievements and performance. Work with the General Manager on performance reviews and Performance Improvement Plans when required.
  • Work with Resort Managers to ensure guides and marine operations staff rosters are communicated well in advance and contracts and accommodations are organized.
  • Ensure uniform, health and hygiene standards are met.

Requirement include but not limited to:

  • Minimum of 10 years industry experience in a leadership capacity.
  • Genuine passion for people, service and growing a dynamic business focused on being a leader in the industry.
  • SVOP Certificate, ROC, MC Certificate, DVS Certificate.
  • Current Marine First Aid.
  • Demonstrated leader in safety and familiar with all regulations for our industry inclusive but not limited to DFO, Transport Canada and Canadian Coast Guard.
  • Preference will be given to those holding a Master Limited Certificate, previous Coast Guest experience and/or those with experience leading a full service marina.
  • Experience leading a diverse team with focus on training and development.
  • Strong inventory management skills for a large fleet of vessels. Previous experience in developing tracking systems for repair and maintenance and inventory, demonstrated experience and knowledge in acquiring vessels and equipment with focus on Yamaha power and Grady White Vessels.
  • Strong multi-tasker with experience in a variety of property management systems, marina operating systems, preventative maintenance systems, reporting and administrative functions.
