The Job

The Personal Lines Underwriting Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the underwriting team while ensuring profitable risk selection.

Key Responsibilities

  • As part of the leadership team, you will provide mentorship through coaching and feedback to communicate expectations for employee performance and facilitate sessions for the sharing of knowledge and best practices.
  • You will monitor the performance and workload of the team’s portfolio using computer software to ensure company benchmarks are met and lead periodic reviews for quality assurance purposes.
  • You will ensure adherence to policies, procedures and underwriting guidelines.
  • You will be able to identify and recommend policy and process changes to support product development, increase efficiency and provide superior service.
  • Part of your job will be to perform employee performance reviews and interview potential new employees.
  • You will communicate decisions, and respond to requests in a prompt and professional manner.
  • You will be supporting the development and implementation of business change for both short and long term direction.
  • You will act as a subject matter expert for insurance policies, processes, regulations and audits.
  • You will analyze risk and recommend an informed course of action.
  • You will consult with Management on underwriting and staffing issues.
  • Help to foster positive working relationships with internal and external parties, including networking at industry events.
  • We may need you to perform other duties as assigned

  • Excellent decision making skills with the ability to provide justification.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • You are strongly able to multi-task and monitor progress to meet competing deadlines.

Ideally you:

  • Have 5 years of Property and Casualty industry experience
  • Have experience leading a team and driving towards a high performance culture, or have demonstrated these leadership qualities
  • Post-secondary education or related business experience
  • Have completed a Property and Casualty Industry Designation such as the CIP
