BC Women’s Hospital + Health Centre Families in Recovery (FIR) Program is a provincial specialized perinatal service that provides primary care to antenatal and postpartum women who use substances and to infants exposed to substances in an interdisciplinary approach. Through the provision of treatment and supports focused on principle based practice and integrated programming, the interdisciplinary team at FIR focuses on stabilization and harm reduction in a recovery-oriented approach to care.

This acute care service has 12 beds for women who want to stabilize their substance use and address any pregnancy related concerns and/or withdraw from substance use during pregnancy. The Model of Care at FIR was renewed in 2020 through a collaborative process to align perinatal substance use practice on the unit to the best evidence and address the evolving needs women, children and families.

Working collaboratively from the philosophy of care at FIR includes trauma and violence-informed practice, harm reduction, Indigenous Cultural safety and mother-baby togetherness through Rooming-in, the Clinical Nurse Mentor position will provide coaching, mentoring, leadership and support to the nursing team at FIR. The Clinical Nurse Mentor role will use a holistic approach to provide clinical guidance to advance perinatal substance use practice across the unit.

What you’ll do

  • Collaborate with interprofessional team leaders to establish priorities for nurse and team learning.
  • Facilitate staff learning and development by role modeling best practice nursing skills and related competencies.
  • Promote skill development and clinical decision making, answering questions related to client care and assisting with problem-solving.
  • Observe staff as they are performing client care, intervening as necessary to demonstrate appropriate provision of care.
  • Provide feedback to ensure care is provided according to program standards, standards of practice and clinical practice guidelines.
  • Provide clinical guidance, support and on the job learning experiences for nurses in the application of nursing processes and practice standards; observe and evaluate clinical practice to identify training and development opportunities.
  • Collaborate with and support clinical education by contributing to the determination of skill development priorities for staff. Support preceptors/preceptees and mentors/mentees using teaching and learning principles as required.

What you bring

  • Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Three (3) years of psychiatric nursing experience in women’s health or pediatric nursing, including experience mentoring nursing staff as well as leadership training or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Valid BC Driver's License and access to personal vehicle may be required.

You also have demonstrated the ability to:

  • Provide clinical mentorship and clinical practice support for the designated area of expertise.
  • Know nursing theory and practice within a client/family centered model of care.
  • Optimize scope of practice for designated patient population.
  • Provide consultation, direction and leadership.
  • Teach, demonstrate, facilitate, mentor and coach.
  • Know of adult learning principles.
