Job Description

Cenovus Energy is looking for a highly experienced Senior Advisor to join our External Communications team.

You will take on a broad range of communications responsibilities, including providing strategic external communications advice to the company as well as to senior leaders and the Executive Team.

You are a passionate, confident, motivated, high-performing individual who can carry out multiple assignments concurrently with strong attention to detail. You are able to work both independently and collaboratively and you come to the table with creative solutions.

Work Environment:

This role is a fulltime employee position based in our downtown Calgary office.


  • Anticipate and mitigate potential risks to Cenovus’s reputation; promote and enhance the company’s reputation as a responsible oil and natural gas developer
  • Provide external communications counsel to executives, senior leaders and other teams across the company
  • Be a compelling spokesperson for the company, respond to media inquiries and participate in interviews
  • Where appropriate, find other effective spokespeople within the company, including executives and provide interview prep documents, prep sessions and media training, as required
  • Contribute to the development and execution of advertising campaigns, including a digital marketing campaign. Assist in the development of a digital strategy for the company
  • Contribute to Cenovus’s social media strategy by creating compelling and innovative social media content and look for opportunities to leverage our platforms to tell Cenovus’s story through targeted campaigns
  • Write quarterly news releases, conference call speaking notes and other financial news releases on a rotating basis as well as book and help prepare the CEO for quarterly one-on-one media interviews
  • Write general news releases, develop and maintain critical messaging documents, standby statements and media backgrounders about our operations, technologies and other critical issues
  • Write or oversee the delivery of key external documentation such as the annual report
  • Provide media and public speaker training for executives, leaders and subject matter experts
  • Write speeches and speaking notes for executives, senior leaders or subject matter experts
  • Represent Cenovus at external industry organizations (e.g. CAPP, COSIA, Evok), advocating on our behalf and providing input on critical communications
  • Provide strategic counsel and on-call support for emergency communications
  • Organize and assist with news conferences and other media events
  • Arrange and guide site tours of our operations for external parties such as media, business groups, politicians, industry groups and teachers


  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada
  • At least ten years of professional communications experience, including significant time working in a corporate communications role
  • Demonstrated superior writing skills, including long and short-form writing and speech writing are a must. Writing samples required
  • Significant experience working with social media and digital communications, including corporate web and intranet sites
  • Demonstrated experience working on advertising campaigns, including significant digital marketing campaigns, a strong asset
  • Proven experience providing strategic communications counsel to senior leaders and executives
  • Demonstrable experience writing corporate communications plans
  • A track record of working with the media as a company spokesperson
  • Hands-on experience developing and overseeing the delivery of critical documents such as annual reports
  • Experience working collaboratively with an investor relations team and familiarity with investor-related materials
  • Expertise delivering in-house media and speaker training

Beneficial Skills:

  • Experience working with industry groups such as CAPP and COSIA or similar organizations from other industries
  • Experience in an on-call emergency communications role developing emergency communications plans
  • Video shooting and editing skills
  • Familiarity with the Canadian oil and gas industries and an understanding of current industry issues
  • Able to work in high-pressure situations such as television interviews, direct newsroom experience is an asset
