Product Engineering has an immediate opening for a Senior Controls Engineer to join the Systems Engineering team. This role can be based in Burnaby, BC or Bend, OR. The successful candidate will work well independently and with the existing engineering team members to contribute to the development of Ballard’s fuel cell system products.

Primary Responsibilities Include:
  • Design and implementation of control logic including handling of complex control systems involving state machines, alarm handling, PID loops and similar
  • Software development using text-based coding languages such as C or IEC61131-3 structured text
  • Software development to ISO26262 requirements
  • Implementing and testing software for communication to CAN devices as well as handling of signals from digital and analog devices
  • Preparation of technical documents, including component/system design documents
  • Verification and validation of software through inspection, simulation and testing
  • Troubleshooting of system and software behavior using a variety of techniques

Secondary Responsibilities Include:
  • Documentation of control system requirements, design specifications, test procedures and test reports
  • Troubleshooting of electrical/software interfaces
  • Supporting hazard analysis through participation in DFMEA activities

Minimum Requirements:
  • Engineering or related degree
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience developing software for control systems
  • Ability to understand and implement state and process logic, digital and analog control systems
  • Experience commissioning, tuning, and troubleshooting control systems
  • Commitment to delivering high quality software following established processes, procedures and coding styles

Desired Traits:
  • An engineering degree from an accredited Electrical, Electronics or Computer Science university/college/institutional program
  • Ability to read Process & Instrumentation Diagrams
  • Experience with instrumentation including pressure, temperature and flow measurement devices
  • Knowledge of fuel cell systems and their controls
  • Experience with power device interfaces (motor drives, inverters, power supplies, contactors, DC/DC convertors etc.)
  • Familiarity with ISO26262, EN50657 or similar functional safety standards
