The LDB is one of two branches of government responsible for the cannabis and liquor industry of B.C. We operate the wholesale distribution of beverage alcohol and non-medical cannabis within the province, as well as the household retail brands of BC Liquor Stores and BC Cannabis Stores.

The LDB’s Information Technology Division consists of seven departments and 23 distinctive units, with 200+ FTEs. IT has adopted a multi-sourcing strategy and leverages a combination of internal and external expertise, including outsourced services, contracted services and shared services, to deliver the IT mandate of supporting current operations and future business needs. Strategic plans, governance of standards and risk management are all developed internally to support Divisional and Corporate goals.

Reporting to the Manager of Database Services and Middleware, the Senior SQL Server DBA is responsible for providing the Liquor Distribution Branch (LDB) with expert technical direction and leadership concerning development, enhancement, installation, and maintenance of the organizations mission critical databases, the various SQL Server databases and various applications in use at the LDB.

This position will participate in LDB’s Cloud Journey by working with architects to define strategies and framework of hybrid Database as a Service mode.

Education & Experience:

Degree or diploma in Information Technology or a related field, with a minimum of 4 years of recent, related experience*.


An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered i.e., 5 years of recent related experience* with formal course work and/or certificates.

*Recent, related experience must have occurred in last 7 years and must include experience with the following:

  • MS SQL Server 2012 or later
  • Operating Systems: Windows Server
  • Disaster Recovery/ high availability strategies: ‘AlwaysOn’ AG (Availability Groups), Clustering, Log Shipping, Replication
  • Performance tuning

Preference may be given to those candidates with the following experience:

  • Analyzing and troubleshooting database servers through load testing, performance tuning, statistics, indexing, and database design.
  • Automating standard DBA tasks such as capacity planning, backups, and performance monitoring.
  • Maintaining and supporting large scale multi-server databases in an enterprise level 24/7 environment
  • SQL/T-SQL development and data modeling
  • SharePoint 2013, 2016
  • Azure
  • PowerShell


  • Knowledge of data management and software development
  • Knowledge of Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL)
  • Knowledge of Information Management and Data Management principles practices and processes
  • Knowledge and experience of Software development life cycle


  • Ability to diagnose and resolve issues/problems related to database, OS and associated tools
  • Ability to deal with clients in a courteous, respectful and professional manner
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing
