Position Summary

The Telecommunications Operator ensures all calls on the IWK Health Centre communication system, the main console, the emergency system and the paging system are processed promptly, efficiently and courteously according to Health Centre policy; directs calls and messages; announces emergency procedures; and monitors Health Centre alarms. The Telecommunications Operator will also provide clerical support for the department, as required.

Hours of Work

33.25 hours bi-weekly. Two week schedule: Wednesday 16:00-22:00, Friday 23:00 – 07:00, Saturday 23:00-07:00, Tuesday 07:00-15:00, Wednesday 07:00 – 15:00.

  • Minimum High School Diploma or G.E.D. required.
  • Graduate from a recognized Office Administration Program preferred
  • Previous experience in a customer service or call centre role required
  • Recent telecommunications/switchboard experience in a Health Care setting preferred
  • Familiarity with Multitone Paging system an asset
  • Proven ability to respond to emergency situations in an efficient and appropriate manner
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and other computer programs/technology (testing may be conducted on candidates)
  • Demonstrated customer-service and communication skills required
  • Knowledge of SAP an asset
  • Knowledge of Medical Terminology an asset
  • Knowledge of Meditech preferred
  • Keyboarding skills minimum of 40 wpm required, 60 wpm is preferred (testing may be conducted on candidates)
  • Proven team player with excellent interpersonal skills required
  • Demonstrated ability to respectfully work with a variety of inter-professional team members required
  • High degree of initiative, diligence, attention to detail, and self-discipline/focus
  • Commitment to continual learning and willing to share knowledge and support the development of co-workers
  • Demonstrated commitment to Family Centred Care required
  • Excellent multi-tasking, organizational and prioritization skills required
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred
