The world of video games is doing well in the province! The proof is the announcement of Ubisoft to hire 1,000 people in the next few months. The French video game giant plans to add 675 employees to its studio in Montreal, 200 in Quebec City and to open a new office in Saguenay that will have 125 positions.
A new SKYSPA resort spa will be launched at the foot pf Mont Saint-Bruno, on Rang des Vingt-Cinq Est, enabling 500 jobs to be created. The opening is scheduled for the summer of 2019.

A new branch of Giant Tiger has just opened in Matane. The 31 employees served their first customers on September 16. The company has over 225 stores in Canada and employs 8,000 people.

The Technology Evaluation Center, specializing in analysis of commercial software solutions, is locating in the city of Longueuil. In this case, the company plans to hire 125 in the short term and another 80 jobs should be created within three years for its artificial intelligence sector.
In Saint-Eustache, a new Advanced Powders & Coatings plant, an Arcam AB and GE Additive company – the world’s largest producer of metal powders used in additive manufacturing – was inaugurated. By the end of the year, more than 100 people are expected to have been hired.
LAY-OFFS
The Hudson’s Bay Company lost $201 million in the second quarter of 2017 and has dismissed 2,000 people in North America. The company is counting on the fall and holiday season to correct the situation.
Reduction of staff for the Waterville TG plant, which currently is going through a slow period. The automotive seal manufacturer has temporarily laid off 54 unionized workers.
To keep up with the wave of computerization, the Laurentian Bank has decided to eliminate its counter services in favour of ATMs and online services. By December 31, 2018, 150 people will see their jobs abolished.
The toy world is not doing well. Toys R Us (United States and Canada) has just gone into receivership from its creditors. The toy giant now has to “restructure its debt” to avoid bankruptcy. If the chain closes its doors, 65,000 people will be without a job.
Another toy giant that is suffering from a drop in sales is Lego. The Danish group has just announced the elimination of 1,400 positions around the world. In recent years the company has diversified into other sectors, which has limited its ability to develop.
