The Occupational Health and Safety Nurse (OHSN) is a key member of the City’s People Services team, responsible for promoting and protecting the health, safety, and well-being of City employees across all departments - including but not limited to, Fire & Emergency Services, Operations, Environmental Services, Recreation and Engineering.
JOIN OUR TEAM
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Employee & Labour Relations and Health & Safety, the OHSN delivers comprehensive occupational health programs, supports disability management, and provides expert guidance on workplace health and wellness issues in alignment with provincial legislation and municipal policies. The OHSN will foster an inclusive workplace in order to support both the Employee and the Employer through the employment life cycle.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responsible for the development and implementation of occupational health and wellness-related policies, procedures, protocols by establishing effective metrics and reporting. Provides expert advice to People Services staff on all occupational health best practices and emerging issues/trends.
- Performs risk assessments, audits and statistical reviews and prepares written reports with recommendations
- Acts as a resource in employee complex health & safety/disability management related matters to ensure due diligence.
- Develops and delivers formal and informal training on occupational health and wellness issues.
- Facilitates Ergonomic assessments with the aim to support employees from an AODA perspective.
- Collaborates with employees, medical practitioners, and other community health-care professionals in order to facilitate employee referrals for appropriate follow-up for STD, LTD, WSIB claims or Independent medical exams.
- Manages relationships with third party medical and rehabilitative service providers ensuring adherence to effective performance standards, cost control and contractual agreements.
- Conducts regular file reviews on Return to Work/Work Accommodation to ensure success in achieving early, safe return to work and appropriate follow-up action.
- Participates in multidisciplinary teams & meetings to establish short term and long term RTW plans for complex claims including management, union and PS staff.
- Provides guidance on fit to work, post offer/pre-placement medical assessments and physical/cognitive job demands analysis
- Maintains practices for the retention of confidential employee health records and other administrative methods and procedures according to MFIPPA, PHIPA or other legislation.
- Partners with the broader PS team, Emergency Management Coordinator and the Health and Safety Committees for City wide planning initiatives related to Health, Safety and Wellness.
- Provides support to the Joint Occupational Health & Safety Committees, Accessibility Committee or other relevant stakeholders where needed. Works collaboratively with Security and Facility Management Teams to ensure a safe workplace.
REQUIRED SKILLS & COMPETENCIES
- A Registered Nurse licensed to practice in Ontario with a recognized certificate in Occupational Health Nursing.
- Good standing with Ontario Occupational Health Nurse Association (OOHNA) is an asset.
- Minimum of 5 years related job experience in occupational health and disability management.
- Current knowledge of psychological and physical interventions/treatments, rehabilitative and therapeutic techniques and technology.
- Established track record of creating positive change in an organization, in Health and Safety, WSIB and return-to-work programs.
- Knowledge of income protection plans such as STD, LTD and WSIB
- Knowledge of relevant collective agreements, corporate policies and procedures, employment and privacy legislation and regulations, including the Ontario Human Rights Code, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, MFIPPA, and PHIPA.
- Highly-developed research, reasoning, analytical and problem-solving skills to create effective solutions to complex challenges and provide progress reports to Senior Management and other stakeholders.
- Ability to develop presentations and to deliver in-house training.
- Valid Ontario driver’s license and ability to travel between municipal sites
