About the role
The MaRS Investment Accelerator Fund (IAF), a venture capital initiative of MaRS Discovery District, stands as one of Canada’s most active early-stage venture capital funds. Founded in 2008 and backed by the Province of Ontario, IAF exists to accelerate the commercialization of innovative technologies in Ontario through capital investment and hands-on support. With an active portfolio of over 130 companies across enterprise software, healthtech, cleantech, and deep tech, the fund has played a critical role in facilitating the creation of technology companies that will build future prosperity, create jobs and build critical mass within Ontario’s innovation economy.
Operating from hubs in Toronto, Waterloo, and Ottawa, IAF integrates with MaRS’ broader mission to help innovators create a better world - anchored by principles of boldness, collaboration, and results-driven impact.
Reporting to the CEO of MaRS, the Managing Director provides strategic and operational leadership for IAF, shaping investment direction, managing fund deployment, and ensuring high performance across the portfolio. This executive will serve as IAF’s primary external voice—building relationships with founders, co-investors, and government stakeholders while representing the Fund across provincial and industry forums. Internally, the Managing Director will lead a seasoned investment team, fostering a culture of accountability and collaboration, and will hold fiduciary responsibility for governanceand financial oversight.
The ideal candidate is a proven investment leader with experience overseeing early-stage venture portfolios, setting strategic direction, and guiding teams through dynamic and complex environments. They bring a deep understanding of technology and financial markets, strong analytical capability, and a passion for supporting transformative innovation. Equally comfortable engaging private investors and ecosystem stakeholders, this leader combines entrepreneurial agility with public-minded stewardship. Exceptional communication, stakeholder engagement, and mentoring skills are essential, along with a demonstrated commitment to inclusive leadership and long-term impact.
This opportunity offers a uniquely compelling platform for an investment leader to shape the future of Ontario’s innovation economy. Based in Toronto, one of North America’s most globally connected and culturally diverse cities, the role combines civic purpose with strategic influence. For a candidate motivated by mission-driven leadership, system-level impact, and the chance to work at the intersection of public policy and venture capital, the Managing Director role at IAF represents both a career-defining opportunity and a meaningful call to service.
