THE POSITION:
Events East Group is now inviting applications for the position of Head Ice Technician with our Ice Maintenance team.
Reporting to the Director, Business Development, the Head Ice Technician is responsible for leading the Ice Maintenance team to ensure the timely and high-quality delivery of ice surfaces and ice products. This role combines team leadership with hands-on technical expertise, requiring a high level of skill in ice operations and a strong understanding of the equipment and processes needed to support varying event requirements. Flexibility is essential, as shift scheduling is based on events and operational needs.
THE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leadership:
Manage team performance and behavior through real-time coaching, formal feedback, and recognition, upholding departmental expectations and organizational policies.
Conduct annual performance reviews and support professional development through regular check-ins and mentorship.
Lead full-cycle recruitment for the Ice Maintenance team in collaboration with the Director, Business Development, ensuring staffing aligns with operational needs.
Participate in leadership planning and departmental initiatives to drive team growth and operational effectiveness.
Collaborate with internal departments to build strong partnerships, ensuring alignment with event goals and ice service requirements.
Foster a respectful and inclusive team culture by modeling professional conduct, encouraging collaboration, and promoting accountability.
Operations:
Lead the installation, maintenance, and removal of ice surfaces and ice products, ensuring all safe practices are followed and event requirements are met.
Oversee the use, maintenance, and inventory of ice equipment, tools, and materials to maintain operational readiness and minimize event disruptions.
Perform and coordinate preventative maintenance, identifying repair needs early and scheduling service to reduce equipment downtime.
Inspect, repair, and replace arena boards, shielding, and related systems, upholding facility standards and ensuring a safe environment for guests and staff.
Support sustainable operations by monitoring equipment efficiency, reducing waste, and promoting environmentally responsible practices across all maintenance activities.
Maintain clean, organized, and well-prepared work areas, upholding professionalism and facility standards throughout events.
Perform other duties as required
Training & Development:
Provide hands-on training and practical guidance to the Ice Maintenance team, supporting skill development and operational competence.
Develop, implement, and update staff training programs and standard operating procedures to ensure safe and consistent practices.
Mentor and support team members' growth, encouraging continuous learning and reinforcing department standards.
Maintain team access to and awareness of operational policies and updates.
Promote the adoption of new technologies and techniques, facilitating ongoing skill development to meet evolving operational needs.
Administration:
Schedule departmental staff to cover all ice-related events, proactively adjusting for staffing shortages to maintain adequate coverage.
Process and audit payroll for the Ice Maintenance team accurately and on time.
Coordinate supply ordering and inventory control for departmental materials and equipment.
Health & Safety:
Adhere to all departmental standards, guidelines, and procedures to ensure the safety of oneself, team members, and guests.
Report safety hazards, near misses, and incidents promptly, taking appropriate action to address hazards when safe, and actively leading investigations, as required.
Wear, use, and ensure the appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required, re-porting any violations or damaged PPE within the team or onsite.

THE PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Education and Experience:
3+ years of experience in people leadership.
5+ years of experience in Ice Maintenance in a live arena or ice rink setting.
Experience using an ice re-surfacer and ice edger required.
