Description Under general supervision, the incumbent will be responsible for the maintenance of all mechanical Grounds equipment as well as all vehicle maintenance.
Typical Duties The following illustrative tasks indicate the level of skill required and the extent of the responsibility involved in this position. They in no way limit the incumbent to the tasks indicated.
Flexibility of the employee to perform a wide variety of functions is necessary in successfully fulfilling the requirements of this position. The degree to which each employee performs each of the following tasks listed below will vary according to where and when the employee is scheduled to work.
Maintains, repairs, and sets up Grounds equipment for seasonal grounds use. Performs duties such as testing, adjusting, lubricating, draining, winterizing, inspecting and rebuilding on equipment such as tractors, riding lawn mowers and loaders. Installs, repairs, services and adjusts specialized attachments such as aerators, over seeders/dethatches, sod cutters, drum aerators, vacuums, rakes, fertilizer spreaders, hydraulic snow plows, PTO-driven snow blowers and salters. Repairs, adjusts and services small equipment such as walk-behind power grass mowers, trimmers, and various types and sizes of leaf blowers, hedge trimmers, roto-tillers, chainsaws, walk-behind snow blowers, hydro-static transmissions on equipment, etc. Repairs and re-builds small 4-stroke, 2-stroke single cylinder, and small diesel engines of various types. Maintains and repairs Grounds vehicles such as 4x4 pick-up trucks, Jeeps, Vans, and dump trucks. Ensures correct, safe and orderly storage of all Grounds equipment. Operates all landscape equipment such as front deck mowers, aerators, overseeder, front end loader, skid steer tractors, 4x4 trucks, dump trucks. Operates snow removal equipment such as 4x4 trucks with plows, tractors with either snow plow or snow blower, salters, shovels and skid steers. Trouble-shoots mechanical break-downs. Maintains correct and up-to-date records of all repairs, hours of use, fuel used on all Grounds equipment and vehicles. Performs Landscape Technician I duties as required.
Identifies equipment and vehicle damage or defects; recommends equipment replacement.
Assists in testing and evaluating performance of mechanical equipment and vehicles in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications and departmental procedures.
Keeps up-to-date on small engine and mechanical repair skills. Works with new technologies as they’re introduced and acquires skills. Reads manufacturer’s service manuals and other related service materials.
Operates and maintains shop equipment and tools such as grinders, drills and precision instruments. Demonstrates safe working practices and techniques. Ensures equipment and vehicles are maintained in a safe operating condition. Other related duties as required.
Minimum Requirements For Selection Education: Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent combination of education and experience. Certificate in small engine repair or the successful completion of a related training program or apprenticeship.
Experience: Minimum two years of related experience. Previous knowledge and experience with the various brands of equipment in use is an asset.
Other: Possession of valid Provincial Class ”G" driver's license, physical ability to perform required duties, demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in English (oral and written). Ability to work in all weather conditions and may be required to work long and varied hours. May be required to possess Class ”D” or ”DZ” driver’s license.
