Job Summary
This internship will support CED’s data modernization strategy and the development and execution of key research and analysis activities. The Market Research Intern will contribute to a variety of projects of different scopes and scales:

A key component of the intern’s portfolio will be supporting the development and delivery of sector toolkits, repositories of information and resources on CED’s key sectors.

The Economic Intelligence team provides other CED teams, business and community partners, and partner civic institutions with support for ad-hoc research needs such as inquiries and quick turn-around requests. Examples of potential Research & Data Analyst Intern tasks may include determining if the information requested is readily available / accessible, and if so, compiling the information requested into concise and clear professional communications for the given client / user.

The Market Research Intern will support small projects to build the Economic Intelligence team’s capacity for more efficient and effective capture, analysis, and management of data and information. Examples of tasks may include high-level audits of CED’s data and research products, automation of simple processes, and high-level assessments of data capture and management systems.
This is a 8-week Term.
Tasks & Responsibilities

Assist in defining scopes, execute and support project management of internal and external research and economic analysis projects to assist with CED initiatives, including activities related to target industry sectors and geographic markets.

Manage, analyze, and present raw data into meaningful information and trends for non-academic audiences. Be able to intelligently interpret data and concisely communicate results and key takeaways.

Conduct ad-hoc industry research to support advancement of the economic strategy.

Prepare presentations, summaries, short reports, and other materials relating research findings and CED perspectives for delivery to community and stakeholders.

Monitor and gather data on metrics that help communicate the state of the local economy and gaps or areas for improvement.

Serve as a general internal CED resource on economic, research and analysis matters.
Your Growth Journey
The Market Research Intern will build expertise in economic research, data analysis, and reporting by managing and interpreting raw data into actionable insights. This role offers exposure to developing sector toolkits, conducting market intelligence, and supporting ad-hoc research requests for internal teams and stakeholders. Along the way, the intern will strengthen skills in project management, automation, and data systems while learning to present findings through clear, professional reports and presentations—building a strong foundation for future roles in research, analytics, and economic development.
Supervision Plan
The Market Research Intern will report directly to and work day-to-day under the supervision of the Director, Insights and Innovations, who will provide guidance on a day-to-day basis. A list of deliverables for the internship term will also be provided. Progress on deliverables will be tracked and discussed through regular check-ins. At the midpoint and during the final week of the internship, the Director, Insights and Innovations will hold meetings with the intern to provide an assessment of overall performance on the work achieved to date.
Team Mentoring
The Intern will report to and work closely with the Director, Insights and Innovations,, who will provide mentorship, training, and guidance on deliverables and projects. Additional support and training will be provided by the Data Scientist and Economic Intelligence Coordinator. The intern will also collaborate with other CED teams to gather input and ensure high-quality work that delivers meaningful value to the organization and its stakeholders.
Field of Study
Currently enrolled in post-secondary education (Business, Economics, Policy, Research, or related field).
Key Skills & Competencies

Working knowledge of socio-economic issues relevant to Calgary and Alberta

Experience coding in Python, SQL or other programming language

Experience with PowerBI, Tableau or other visualization tool

Strong writing, communication, and time management skills

Strong internet research and data analysis skills

Ability to critically consider and frame questions to prompt deeper engagement and exploration of issues and context

Ability to creatively and critically source information from across a variety of media

Ability to analyze large amounts of data/information and make inferences and recommendations

Ability to analyze and develop understanding of economic data within local, national, and international contexts and systems

Ability to conduct academic level research and present findings clearly to a non-academic audience

Ability to work independently and develop ownership of work / projects that require collaboration

Ability to draft research reports, briefing notes, and presentations with a mindset of user-centricity

Intermediate to high proficiency in Excel
Canada Summer Job Eligibility

Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment.
