About the role

School Counselor

Main Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the comprehensive counselling program within a school(s) focusing on preventative and responsive programs and services.
  • Ensure programs and services are principally concerned with the personal, social, educational and career needs of all students, placing priority on the best interest of students.
  • Work within an established framework for the delivery of specialized services to students, consistent with the Department of Education and Tri-County Regional Centre for Education policies.
  • Collaborate in a team environment and demonstrate a strong commitment to the school improvement process in support of student learning.
  • Report directly to the School Principal(s).

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Valid Nova Scotia Teacher Certification
  • Master’s degree in Counselling, Counselling Psychology, or equivalent
  • Training in Restorative Approaches
  • Training in Trauma Informed Practises
  • Group Counselling Theory and Practice
  • School Counselling Programs
  • Professional Ethics
  • Counselling Skills
  • Career and Transition Counselling
  • Experience teaching at an elementary / secondary level
  • Experience as an elementary / secondary school counsellor
  • Cultural responsivity in Equity and Inclusion within a counselling context
  • Demonstrated ability to value the voice and contribution of others while remaining open to corrective criticism
  • Completion of WHMIS and First Aid, or willingness to obtain upon hire
