The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. We provide open and non-discriminatory access to Alberta’s interconnected power grid and also facilitate Alberta’s competitive wholesale electricity market. We are looking for a Project Manager to join our System Projects team. System Projects is responsible for executing the transmission developments identified in the AESO’s Long-Term Transmission Plan. We conduct engineering studies and develop and execute system projects to maintain compliance with transmission planning standards.

Reporting to the Manager, System Projects, you will play a key role in managing the overall delivery of system projects.

This full-time opportunity offers a competitive salary, and a variable pay program. Accountabilities include but are not limited to:

  • Project initiation and planning

    • Establish project scope, schedule, resources and communication requirements
    • Identify and engage with required stakeholders
    • Develop risk management plans
  • Project execution

    • Direct and oversee work activities for project execution
    • Communicate with stakeholders for input, decisions and updates
    • Manage project priorities and solve project issues
    • Influence and lead cross functional teams to achieve project outcomes
    • Manage projects to comply with legislation, regulations and rules governing AESO activities
  • Project monitoring

    • Validate project progress and maintain desired project outcomes
    • Keep comprehensive, accurate and up-to-date records of project status, schedule, accountabilities and outcomes
    • Validate and control project scope and project change proposals
    • Monitor project resource commitments and resolve conflicts as needed
    • Maintain control over project communications with internal and external stakeholders
    • Identify and mitigate project risks and project interdependencies
    • Report on project progress, risks and other critical updates to the Manager/Director of System Projects
  • Closing

    • Complete project close-out procedures
    • Identify and implement improvements in system project management and delivery

What you’ll bring to us:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business or other related field or equivalent work / industry experience
  • Project Management professional certification (PMP) would be an asset
  • Minimum 8-10 years of leading and directing a portfolio of projects with a high degree of complexity and multiple stakeholders in technical applications
  • Demonstrated achievement in driving business process changes and process improvements
  • Prior experience in regulatory/compliance projects
  • Prior experience in projects that involve multiple business units or have multiple internal and external stakeholders
  • Knowledge of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System, or previous utility experience would be an asset

What do we do Manage and plan the power grid 24 hours a day When you need power, you expect it. We work with industry partners to keep electricity flowing throughout the province. Our system controllers balance supply and demand 24/7, making sure four million Albertans have power when they need it.

Manage and operate the energy markets In Alberta, companies own generation, transmission and distribution facilities. We dispatch the power sold by generators, using the lowest-priced electricity first and then the next lowest until the need for power has been satisfied. We also enforce transmission tariffs and regulations, keeping the market fair and open for everyone.

Plan the future of the system and its infrastructure As Alberta grows, so does its need for electricity. We plan ahead and expand the grid, ensuring the right transmission lines are built as efficiently as possible. As the province moves away from coal-fired power plants, we're enabling investment in renewable energy. In everything we do, our eye is always on the future.
