SCOPE
Reporting to the Manager Research and Innovation Development and the Associate Dean, Research and Innovation, and administratively to the Director of Administration, the incumbent seeks funding opportunities and coordinates and supports innovation and research and technology transfer development. They liaise with granting agencies, industry collaborators, partners, sponsors, venture capital, researchers and labs and facilitate efforts to secure and develop funding opportunities. The incumbent actively pursues the mandate of attracting funds to the Gina Cody School (GCS) researchers and plays a vital role in achieving our strategic objectives. The incumbent identifies and forms collaborative links between researchers and identifies and facilitates technology business development opportunities that fulfill the faculty’s innovation and research mandate.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Coordinate and support innovation and technology development for our researchers in collaboration with the office of the Associate Dean, Research and Innovation. Liaise with granting agencies, industry collaborators, partners, sponsors and facilitate efforts to secure and obtain funds.

• Identify and pursue new areas for innovation and research and strategic initiatives, including new collaborative research and technology funding opportunities, and to liaise with external partners.

• Identify and monitor partnership and business development opportunities and link to appropriate researchers and research teams. Provide support and guidance to researchers as needed in the development of these opportunities.

• Coordinate the work needed to facilitate specific funding opportunities and assist with the preparation of required documentation. Work closely with researchers, OOR personnel and government agencies

• Market, plan and represent our innovation and research expertise to external sponsors and Industry in targeted events. Organize innovation and partnership events to foster and identify innovation and research funding opportunities for researchers and external sponsors and partners.

• Identify, build and cultivate relationships with potential innovation and research partners, in Quebec, Canada and internationally.

• Develop an in-depth knowledge of researchers’ strengths, innovations and expertise. Maintain comprehensive knowledge of strategic priorities for innovation, research and technology.

• Seek and secure strategic alliances and industry partnerships which provide access to data, solidify existing research groups, and stimulate partnership opportunities. Act as subject matter expert for teams of researchers meeting with external partners.

• Assess the capability of key researchers to successfully secure external funding. Explore and identify appropriate funding sources. Research potential funding sources. Provide input on aligning technology transfer proposals in the direction of funding.

• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the provincial, federal and other funding avenues to successfully propel our lab2market objectives. Promptly disseminate this information to researchers. Help Develop and refine strategies for obtaining funds.

• Lead all the activities pertaining to the student innovation program and liaise with University Advancement colleagues.

• Work closely with the research and innovation development advisors in all the activities pertaining to funding development when necessary.

• Perform other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or other related fields, with four to seven years of innovation or research and development experience or business and partnership development experience.

• Master’s degree is highly desirable.

• Research and innovation-related experience within industry or academia desirable. Knowledge of the University innovation and research policies and procedures an asset.

• Research and innovation expertise in engineering and computer science an asset.

• Knowledge of the Gina Cody School’s innovation and research ecosystem an asset.

• Good knowledge (Level 4) of spoken and written English and French language skills to communicate effectively with researchers and external units, write correspondence, read and analyze documents, provide feedback, and produce reports.

• Good knowledge (Intermediate level) of Microsoft Office and Office365.

• Knowledge of the innovation and research funding environment and funding programs in Quebec, Canada and Internationally.

• Experience in preparing and editing grant applications, project management and in budget planning an asset.

• Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, including confidence, tact, discretion and judgment to work effectively with academic researchers and funding agencies.

• Exceptionally detail oriented, with the ability to set and meet deadlines.

• Strong analytical, planning, organizational and problem-solving skills.

• Ability to multi-task and work under pressure in a high-volume environment.

• Proven ability to motivate others, to cultivate partnerships and collaborations, and to deal effectively with researchers, external agencies and technology funding groups.
