About the role

Summary of Duties

Reporting to the Patient Care Manager in Canada’s largest outpatient ALS/Neuromuscular clinic, the Occupational Therapist (OT) works within an interdisciplinary team to provide safe and effective care to the ALS/Neuromuscular patient population. The OT utilizes a person-centered approach, considering occupational performance issues, component skills, and environmental factors that impact the functional level of their patients.

This consult-based role is available on an as-needed basis to a high volume of active ALS/Neuromuscular patients, with a diverse scope that includes: fall prevention education; prescription of gait aids and home safety equipment; adaptations and recommendations for individualized occupational performance issues; energy conservation education; high-technology power wheelchair assessment and prescription; recommendations for upper/lower extremity and cervical spine orthoses; and coordination and linkage to community services.

The OT will champion excellent patient care while demonstrating exceptional leadership, communication, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills. They will actively participate in interprofessional activities such as team meetings and quality improvement initiatives. The role is fast-paced, with many competing demands, and requires significant collaboration both within the team and with community partners.
Strong time-management skills are essential, as are excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to think creatively to find solutions for specific client needs. The OT supports the philosophy of person-centered care, provides education and counseling, and documents information according to appropriate standards.

Qualifications/Skills

  • Successful completion of a recognized post-secondary program in Occupational Therapy and minimum 2 years of experience.
  • Current registration in good standing with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario.
  • Certified ADP Authorizer in seating and mobility (strongly preferred).
  • Previous experience and skills working with Neuromuscular/ALS patients and/or patients with complex needs preferred.
  • Experience or interest working with individuals at end-of-life preferred.
  • Must possess strong written and oral communication, critical thinking, care coordination, and time management skills.
  • Excellent professional judgment, conflict resolution and interpersonal communication skills with patients, families, team members, students and community partners.
  • Experience in assisting with completion of applications and referrals to community resources and system navigation.
  • Ability to work effectively both autonomously and within an interprofessional team, ability to manage a diverse workload while setting priorities and meeting deadlines
  • Demonstrated computer skills e.g. Microsoft Office Suite, Windows 10
  • Familiarity with Sunnycare and/or Accuro will be an asset
