The Avon Maitland District School Board is inviting applications for the permanent full-time position of Literacy Practitioner, with the Centre for Education and Learning at one of our offices in Huron and Perth counties. This position supports the Get SET Program (The LearningHUB as well as Skills Upgrading and Readiness Program).

Hours of Work: 35 hours per week

Start Date: February 18, 2026

Compensation Package Details:

Rate of Pay: $28.84 per hour as per the Terms and Conditions of Employment for Non-Union Centre for Education and Learning Employees.

Reporting to the Program Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for the duties below.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Selecting, adapting and/or creating appropriate learning materials and resources within the scope of the OALCF for individual and groups of learners;

  • Providing direct instruction, marking written work and facilitating learning for learners individually and in groups;

  • Developing a strategy for managing continuous program intake;

  • Providing accurate and up-to-date program information to inquiries from potential learners;

  • Conducting initial screening of potential clients for Get SET eligibility and suitability;

  • Coordinating referrals on behalf of the learners to other programs and services at the CELs or in the community/province;

  • Managing learner data in government tracking systems including but not limited to EOIS/CaMS;

  • Conducting assessments using task-based and skill-based tools and analyzing assessment results to determine learners' current ability with regard to particular competencies;

  • Managing information exchange with ministry and community partners regarding learner's initial, ongoing or exit assessment;

  • Developing and implementing a comprehensive assessment strategy applicable to each learner;

  • Working with learners to create individualized Learner Plans (Service Plans);

  • Conducting goal-setting with learners; ensuring appropriateness of goal;

  • Organizing and managing learner portfolios and Learner Plan files;

  • Transferring Learner Plan information, monitoring and tracking learner progress in government tracking systems including but not limited to EOIS/CaMS;

  • Conducting regular one-to-one check-ins with learners to discuss/update Learner Plans;

  • Maintaining accurate and up-to-date information on transition requirements to 5 goal paths;

  • Selecting, administrating and scoring appropriate Milestones and Culminating Tasks when appropriate;

  • Responding to learner needs for written letters, reports and related documentation;

  • Maintaining awareness of current Education Ontario and local community/provincial support programs and services;

  • Participating in project development work and trials of new materials as requested;

  • Working cooperatively with co-sponsoring agencies and other teaching and administrative staff;

  • Other duties as assigned

Job Specifications and Requirements:

  • One year Adult Literacy Educator Certificate;
  • Minimum one year teaching or instructing experience (adult preference);
  • Experience working with adults with special learning needs and/or learning disabilities;
  • Knowledge of the Get SET Program;
  • Excellent command of oral and written English and math skills;
  • Conflict resolution skills;
  • Positive attitude;
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Flexibility - able to adapt to change;
  • Can multi-task;
  • Computer proficiency required and ability to facilitate learning through technology;
  • Good working knowledge of the principles of adult education;
  • Good understanding of a task-based approach to programming;
  • Some knowledge of teaching theory and effective instructional models;
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.
