Student Page (Part-time) (16 week contract from May to August)

The Bradford West Gwillimbury Public Library is a community-focused, single-branch Library serving a diverse population of 42,800. The community includes urban and rural areas with most of the population centered in town, which is on the edge of the GTA and adjacent to the Holland Marsh. Bradford is a growing community with an increasing demand for library services.

Reporting to the Manager of Public Services, the Student Page is responsible for assisting with the organization and maintenance of library materials, ensuring they are shelved properly and in a timely manner.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Accurately shelve all library materials in their proper locations according to the dewey decimal system or library-specific classification system. This includes regular shelf reading to ensure items are in the correct order.
  • Shifts, faces and blocks materials when shelves become too empty or overcrowded while taking care to break library classifications and sequences in a logical fashion.
  • Routinely tidies the public areas of the Library to maintain the orderly and attractive appearance of the collection and facility – particular attention is paid to the children’s area and closing duties.
  • Retrieves material from manual book drop, feeds returns onto the sorter and empties sorting bins promptly onto shelving carts in sorted order.
  • Searches and retrieves material from the shelves including for holds, missing items and other lists.
  • Follows Page opening and/or closing procedures.
  • Monitors behavior of library users when working in the public area and reports issues to frontline staff.
  • May be requested to assist with program set up and take down.

Key Competencies and Qualifications

  • Completed at least one year of secondary school education.
  • Preference given to those with library experience or volunteer experience in a library.
  • Highly detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills combined with excellent alpha-numeric skills.
  • Requires frequent lifting, stooping, reaching as well as pushing carts (up to 20 lbs).
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and perform tasks accurately and efficiently.
  • Good communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to promote a culture of inclusiveness and work with a diverse population of employees, participants, agencies, and the public.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as part of a regular schedule.
  • Ability to complete a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check upon hire.

The position offers an hourly rate of $17.56 (CUPE Local 905.29 rates) and is for approximately 12 hours per week.

Bradford West Gwillimbury is a town in south-central Ontario, in the County of Simcoe in the Toronto Census Metropolitan Area on the Holland River. West Gwillimbury takes its name from the family of Elizabeth Simcoe, née Gwillim. The former Town of Bradford was amalgamated with portions of the former Townships of West Gwillimbury and Tecumseth to become the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury on January 1, 1991.
