About the role

The Accountant will ensure that all Canadian transactional and ad-hoc activities are complete, appropriately timely, accurately executed, and related documentation assembled, filed and retained in accordance with Littler Policies and relevant external requirements and regulations. Canadian Activities include client billing, client collections, cash management, accounts payable, payroll, general ledger and tax submissions.

This is a hybrid position located in Toronto.

Responsibilities

  • The Canadian systems of internal control are designed, maintained, executed, monitored and refined to ensure the completeness, accuracy, timely and fair reporting of all transactions.
  • Prepare accurate and timely working papers and financial reports to enable the fiscal year tax filings, collaborating with external tax firm to ensure all deliverables are met.
  • Prepare month end and year end adjusting entries related to accruals, allowances and depreciation.
  • Keep abreast of changes in tax rules and ensure compliance with rules impacting financial reporting and billing.
  • Calculation, filing and payment of monthly HST/QST in adherence with Canada Revenue and Revenu Quebec guidelines.
  • Prepare monthly reports for shareholders related to revenue, expenses, billings and WIP as well as any ad hoc reporting upon request.
  • Collaborate with the Business Insight team to develop annual budget, forecast expenses, review periodically throughout the year.
  • Monitor and journalize general bank activities, trust account activities, identify and correct any discrepancies, and account reconciliation on a monthly basis.
  • Ensure compliance with all Law Society filings and trust account requirements, including overseeing the reconciliation and remittance of regular reporting on insurance filings for any province or territory which Littler operates in Canada.
  • Manage overall work in progress and accounts receivable in line with shareholder targets and bring forward any significant issues to the appropriate personnel.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated mastery of accounting skills and concepts and general business acumen typically acquired via a bachelor’s degree in accounting or comparable field, 3 or more years of accounting experience, multi-location, multi-currency accounting department, ideally in a Law Firm or other Professional Services and/or owner managed environment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in; 3E, Microsoft excel sufficient to organize, structure and analyze large sets of complex data, and including skills such as pivot tables and graphs. Demonstrated ability to leverage Microsoft Word and PowerPoint to convey key messages and policies and present findings and ideas. Demonstrated ability to use Outlook to communicate effectively. Demonstrated ability to execute and validate transactions, and extract and analyze data from 3E, third party banking, and other systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate (orally and in writing) with team members, peers, senior management, vendors and internal and external clients.

Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor's degree required in accounting or related field

Experience Required

  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience
  • 3E experience preferred
