About the role

Job Summary

The Aide - Traditional Healing Support is an integral member of the team who will assist our Practitioners and staff in various programming tasks, ensuring smooth and effective delivery of traditional healing practices and community programs. The candidate will have a respectful understanding of First Nations culture and traditions, and the ability to assist Practitioners, Elders and Medicine People as required. As a member of a multi-disciplinary health services team, the Traditional Healing Support Aide will work cooperatively and collaboratively with the Traditional Healing Practitioner, Traditional Wellness Practitioner and the Healing and Wellness Coordinator in the delivery of culturally safe and integrated care.

Qualifications:

  • Persons of First Nations ancestry will be given preference (OHRC, Part II, Special Employment).
  • Ability to communicate in one of the First Nations dialects in the Sioux Lookout Zone is an asset.
  • Minimum level of education required is equivalent to high school graduation and/or completion of an Indigenous studies diploma.
  • Minimum 2 years related experience is required.
  • Knowledge and experience in establishing traditional/cultural and non-traditional networks of support and community resources and services.
  • Extensive traditional/cultural knowledge and practice.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Understanding in wholistic approaches to care.
  • Knowledge of First Nations culture, history, health priorities, geographic realities and social conditions within First Nations communities.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
  • The ability to perform the requirements of the position on a regular basis.
  • Must be willing and able to travel (northern, rural and urban areas).
  • Must be willing and able to work flexible hours.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Support and assist in the setup and management of traditional ceremonies, including sweat lodges and other community healing and wellness events.
  • Setting up and managing community events is required.
  • Will travel with the Traditional Healing Practitioner and Traditional Wellness Practitioner to the communities to support the engagement of community members in traditional programs and events.
  • Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of the traditional healing spaces.
  • Ensure all tools and materials used in traditional practices are cared for according to cultural protocols.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support the Traditional Healing and Wellness Team.
  • Physical involvement in setting up and managing community events is required.

Working Conditions

  • The position will require working outdoors in various weather conditions, including exposure to both cold and hot temperatures.
  • It will require working evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Considerable standing, lifting, pulling, pushing and bending.
  • Frequently required to lift up to 20lbs.
