The Energy Engineering Intern will work under the supervision of the Intermediate and Senior Engineers within the ECS team. The Energy Engineering Intern will follow ASHRAE, NECB, CaGBC, PassiveHouse, IPMVP, and other relevant guidelines to complete building energy audits, engineering feasibility studies, energy modelling, measurement and verification reports, detailed engineering studies and other engineering tasks in addition to developing your skills in this exciting and growing business sector.

What You Will Do
Knowledge and Skill Development
- Develop and apply knowledge and skills learned during formal education in the energy and carbon solutions discipline.
- Develop knowledge of provincial codes and relevant standards.
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to our company values of quality, client focus, teamwork, sustainability, and community, integrating these principles into daily work practices and interactions with colleagues, clients, and stakeholders.
Routine Engineering Tasks and Collaboration
- Perform routine engineering tasks under close supervision, including preparing models, simulations, simple plans, designs, and calculations in accordance with established codes, standards, and specifications.
- Collaborate with more experienced technical personnel on specific aspects of more complex tasks.
- Assist with various tasks and projects as assigned by supervisors or senior team members to support the overall success of the engineering teams and company objectives.
Technical Surveys, Analysis, and Energy Modelling
- Carry out routine technical surveys, including site investigation and surveys.
- Interview operational staff and audit operating procedures for facilities with a focus on energy and carbon performance.
- Assess where and how energy is consumed throughout a facility.
- Install monitoring equipment to collect energy consumption data.
- Analyze and model the current operation of equipment and proposed energy and carbon conservation measures, utilizing engineering calculations and energy modelling software.
- Conduct energy and carbon modelling (both embodied and operational) for whole buildings in compliance with relevant standards (e.g. CaGBC Zero Carbon).
- Investigate alternative energy-saving opportunities and capital projects, analyzing their economic and environmental viability.
Reporting and Client Interaction
- Work directly with clients under guidance, as required.
- Generate graphics and tables for report submissions.
- Prepare drawings for assigned projects under the guidance of senior engineers, utilizing Revit, CAD, or other software as indicated.
- Assist in preparing drafts of various reports and correspondence.
What you bring to the table
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, sustainability or related field.
- Familiarity with building codes and low carbon standards (e.g. CaGBC Zero Carbon, Passive House, etc.) is an asset
- Proficiency in office and engineering software and tools (e.g., eQuest, Energy+, Helioscope, coding software, Office365).
- Strong technical and analytical skills.
- Ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Detail-oriented with a focus on accuracy and quality.
- Eagerness to learn and develop new skills.
- Working knowledge of MS Excel
- Working knowledge of energy modelling, heat transfer, fluid mechanics and thermodynamics is essential.
- Ability to work under close supervision and follow established procedures.
- A passion for sustainability and lower carbon in our society
- Registered or pursuing registration with the P.E.O.
