About the role

The Role This role offers an excellent opportunity for a Specialist or Trainee Biomedical Scientist to join the Histology Department within NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde. As part of the Pathology team, the post holder will contribute to a professional clinical laboratory service, performing scientific and interpretive work appropriate to their level of training. They will operate complex equipment, apply specialist problem‑solving skills, and support the development of colleagues through mentoring and supervision.

Specialist applicants must be HCPC‑registered Biomedical Scientists with a relevant Biomedical Science degree and the IBMS Specialist Diploma in Cellular Pathology (or equivalent). Trainee applicants must hold an IBMS‑accredited BSc (Hons) and will complete the required training for HCPC registration or specialist portfolio progression. All applicants must have NHS diagnostic laboratory experience, strong organisational and communication skills, and the ability to work accurately, safely, and collaboratively.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

  • Location based in Queen Elizabeth University Hospital
  • Permanent Contract
  • Full-time position (37 hours per week)
  • Shift pattern for this post are 0900-1700 Monday - Friday. Out of hour’s rotations; Mon-Fri evenings 1700-1900, Sat and Public Holidays 0800- 1200

Key Responsibilities The post holder will :

  • Contribute to providing a professional clinical laboratory service, working effectively as a team member as part of the Department of Pathology.
  • Perform all core scientific and interpretive work, which corresponds to the training and qualifications of a Specialist Biomedical Scientist.
  • Be responsible for own work and use specialist training to operate complex equipment and solve problems.
  • Act as a mentor to and participate in training/supervision of Trainee Biomedical Scientists and Healthcare Science Support Workers.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job: Applicants interested in the Specialist Biomedical Scientist post must be registered as a Biomedical Scientist with HCPC and have obtained a degree in Biomedical Science, and hold the IBMS Specialist Diploma in Cellular Pathology, or equivalent knowledge and experience.

Applicants interested in the trainee Biomedical Scientist post must be qualified to BSc Honours level and their degree must be acredited by the Institute of Biomedical Sciences as suitable for HCPC registration. The post holder will undertake a training programme in order to become registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). If already HCPC registered the post holder will undertake a post registration training programme to complete their Specialist Portfolio in Cellular Pathology.

Applicants must have previous experience of working in a NHS diagnostic laboratory environment and must possess good organisational, communication and interpersonal skills. Other essential skills are accuracy and attention to detail, as well as having the ability to work as part of a team and have an understanding of health and safety when working with and handling chemicals / hazardous tissue.

From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full-time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part-time working hours will be reduced on a pro-rata basis. A corresponding increase in the hourly rate will apply, ensuring that overall pay remains unchanged.
