Department Information

The Department of Infrastructure (INF) provides high quality services to the public and Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) departments, boards and agencies including the planning, design, construction, acquisition, operation and maintenance of public transportation infrastructure and the buildings, works and equipment required for the GNWT to deliver its programs and services. INF makes essential petroleum products available for sale to the public where these products are not provided by the private sector, and promotes the development and increased use of energy efficient technologies. INF also regulates electrical and mechanical safety services and licenses individuals and vehicles operating in the territory.

Job Information

Located in Fort Smith and reporting to the Facilities & Maintenance Coordinator, this position is responsible for performing electrical work on GNWT assets in the Fort Smith Region. The incumbent is assigned preventative maintenance work through system-generated work orders and is also responsible for identifying and correcting any electrical problems encountered during the preventative maintenance checks.

The Knowledge, Skills and Abilities include the Ability to communicate effectively with clients in order to co-ordinate appropriate times for accessing buildings and performing the required work. As well as the ability to keep records in order to document work performed on assets and ensure an adequate supply of materials are on hand to complete work. Also included is the ability to diagnose faulty equipment and repair it and the Ability to attend Trade Instruction Courses in Fort Smith or Alberta for at least one 8 week period each year and successful completion of a Trades Entrance exam.

Continued employment as an apprentice is conditional upon the successful completion of the required hours of experience, coursework and exam for each level in the apprenticeship program.

Typically, the above qualifications required for this position are:

Completion of English 20 or 23, Math 20 or 23, Pure Math 20 and at least 10 credits in a Science OR the equivalent. Related experience is an asset.
Class 5 Driver's License
