About the role
The Island Health Department of Surgery, Division of Orthopedic Surgery at the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH) is seeking a full-time Orthopedic Surgeon to join a collegial group of 7 orthopedic surgeons.
NRGH is a 356 acute care bed hospital and serves an immediate population of 160,000 and a secondary referral population of over 350,000. We service a growing community with one of the busiest emergency departments on the island and an aging population. There is ready access to a wide range of other specialty support including critical care, trauma service, nephrology, cardiology, radiology and all surgical subspecialties with the exception of vascular, thoracic and neurosurgery. There is a daytime Orthopedic trauma room time on weekdays.
The successful candidate will participate in a community orthopedic practice with 1 in 7 call responsibilities. They must demonstrate exemplary interpersonal skills, the ability to work collaboratively within the healthcare environment and demonstrate technical competence in providing orthopedic care. The candidate will be expected to manage non-axial orthopedic trauma, as well as primary total knee and hip arthroplasty. Further fellowship training in any reconstructive orthopedic sub-specialty or trauma will be considered an asset.
Interested applicants will hold certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and be eligible for full licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia. Anticipated start date is July 1, 2026 (flexible).
Island Health is affiliated with the UBC Faculty of Medicine and the Division of Orthopedic Surgery supports senior medical students from the Island medical program based at the University of Victoria and the Family Practice Residency Program – Nanaimo Site residents who are based at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. Participation in the teaching program would be an asset.
